The 2016 Honda CRF250X motor remains saddled with a carburetor, and that’s our biggest complaint. Although we did test in at various altitudes, and did not have to reject the excellent accelerator-pump equipped 37mm Keihin FCR flat-slide carb with a throttle position sensor (it works with the CDI’s electronic advance), we still prefer the automatically adjustment to changing conditions that comes with electronic fuel injection. Utilizing an aluminum twin-spar frame, the 2016 Honda CRF250X isn’t the narrowest bike in its class, but it is perfectly comfortable on the trail, especially when standing. Sitting, the tank area is a bit wide, thought the seat/peg/grips relationship is pure Honda—perfect. In this week’s first segment, Editor Don Williams takes us through the new 2023 Kawasaki KLR650 S. This simple machine has been around—in various iterations—for over 30 years, and could arguably be called the “original” ADV bike. Of course it has its pluses and a couple of minuses too, depending on what you use it for. This new S model has a reduced seat height which will certainly appeal to many riders. Don takes us through everything this new version of the venerable KLR does well, and not so well. OK so let’s look at what we are dealing with. The Honda CRF250X runs a liquid cooled, 249cc, 78mm x 54mm bore and stroke, single four-stroke power plant. Despite virtually every other manufacturer going for a twin-cam layout, the entire CR range is served by the Unicam four valve design. It’s taken until the 2018 factory MX bikes for Honda to let go of this design, and to be fair, you can see why. The SOHC option keeps down the weight, shortens the upper part of the engine, hence keeping the centre of gravity low. The extremely narrow valve angles keep the combustion wonderfully efficient compared to the necessarily wide set valves on the equivalent DOHC layout. It’s a clear question of ‘if it’s not broke’ tech, but in terms of raw power, the quoted output is a modest 29.3 bhp, so not MXGP levels … Consumables that have been opened (unless faulty) will not be accepted by TonerOne Ltd. While this is a given on EFI machines, we’re impressed at how resistant to flaming out the 249cc liquid-cooled, four-valve, SOHC (Honda’s unique Unicam) motor is, even when snapping on the throttle when clearing a log at low speed. We almost feel guilty demanding EFI, but we think a 2016 high-performance off-road bike deserves it. After a day of riding the Honda in the Devon woods, were we smiling or frowning? Well the answer is obvious: The Honda is just really good at what it was intended for – trail riding and off-road fun. When you see whoops or are contemplating big air, be cautious at first. This is a casual enduro bike, not a desert racer or motocrosser. Even jumping through whoops was a bit of a challenge, as the suspension compresses a bit too much on each landing. For the moderate air we hit off-road, it’s fine. Don’t get us wrong, you can get a hustle going on this bike, it just requires a bit more thought and planning to keep it on the boil if you are trying to make swift progress.
