About this deal

I’m going to try a medical tape, that is called “silk tape” in Finland. It is similar in other qualities, but the woven fabric is shiny and more slippery. Used to secure things like cannulas (where the drip goes into the body). Should work well in blister prevention. Another big thing to make sure of is that you don't wrap the tape all the way around your foot. It doesn't stretch at all, so it can constrict blood flow and mess up your foot muscles. It wouldn't be an 'ultralight' item if it wasn't multi-use, right? Leukotape can be used in the field for more than just blister prevention if neccessary. Other uses include; Hikers that tout a sub 15-lb base weight often will include Leukotape in their kit and value it not only as a blister bandage and hot spot healer, but for its versatility as well. What other on-trail applications could this terrific tape have that make it even more worth the weight? Here’s 9 ways you can utilize Leukotape on your next adventure.

Leukotape® Classic

Tearable - You don’t want to have to pull out your knife or bring a special pair of scissors to cut your tape. Leukotape rips fairly easily in both directions (though I find it rips crossways better if you 'start' it by biting it). Make sure you understand exactly what your workplace needs and that you have the necessary first aid kits and equipment to provide effective first aid wherever you are. If you don’t discover the high-friction rubbing point (on your foot or elsewhere) until after a bubbly blister has developed, a different protocol is required. Choose the right size plaster, making sure that the wound pad is slightly larger than the wound and that the shape is correct for the area of the body:Apply strips of Leukotape over the susceptible area (ball of your foot, for example) and up either side ensuring that there are no creases or gaps to avoid friction. Note, do not circle the foot entirely as it could constrict your blood supply. If you don't wish to carry around a big roll of leukotape, you can wrap a section around a hollowed out and cut-in-half writing pen or wrap some around a lighter. You could even cut strips and put them on plastic-based film sheets.

Leukotape® K

If you discover a rip in your tent, a snag on your puffy coat, or the soles on your shoes suddenly separating, Luekotape is there to help. When using it to patch gear, cut it into a circular shape and clean your gear as best you can before applying the patch. Though it isn’t advertised, Leukotape can basically act as Duct Tape in most circumstances involving minor gear repairs — just use common sense and don’t rely on it for weight-bearing gear such as trekking poles. Leukotape K is similar to Kinesio Tape (or KT Tape) in that it stretches. It's great for athletes who need to maintain range of motion, but that stretch doesn't necessarily help prevent foot blisters. It's also .5 inches wider than Leukotape P, making it a little more difficult to place comfortably on your feet.Make sure you have stopped the bleeding before applying the plaster. You can do this by applying pressure to the area, using a clean, dry and absorbent material. Tearable. The bandage is dirt and water repellent with a high tensile strength, yet easy to tear by hand either lengthwise or crosswise for convenience, with no need to have scissors on hand. Adhere the overflow sections to the other side of the label paper, to hold the strip in place. Unfortunately, these sections of tape are now trash. Remove the paper margins. You’ll first need to drain the blister (be sure to first sanitize the needle or safety pin you’re using to do this with alcohol). Then clean the blistered area with water and mild biodegradable soap (remembering LNT, and keeping your suds well away from water sources). Next, apply antibiotic ointment and cover the affected area with a Band-Aid or gauze. Finally, secure your bandage system in place with Leukotape, which will also prevent further rubbing as you proceed down the trail and act as a barrier against infection. If you do have a bubbly blister, you will need to drain and treat it. Otherwise, your hot spot needs some sort of barrier to prevent the friction from worsening. Hikers use a variety of methods to act as a barrier - duct tape, moleskin and leukotape are the most common.

Leukotape When Hiking and Backpacking 6 Ways to Use Leukotape When Hiking and Backpacking

Thanks, Marcin. What is the diff between the two Leuko tapes? BTW, this is not for a weeklong hike through the wilderness, just a few miles a day while on vacay in shoes I don’t normally hike in. I’m breaking in new pair of heavy leather boots and have been getting hot spots on my heals and sometimes blisters earlier. Well, that makes sense. I’ll suggest that he credit you, then. Regardless, I’ll teach the Scout leaders about it next Thursday.I've seen some confusion about the difference between the two, and which one is better for blisters, so I'll clear that up here. Holding the plaster by the protective strips, place the wound pad so that it fits over the wound and then peel the protective strips off entirely. Press down the edges of the plaster to secure it. Leukotape can stay on for at least a day, if not several. However, feet need to breath. The actual recommended length of time is 18 hours.
