About this deal

His wife, who he has always trusted implicitly, has proven that she can’t be trusted, and his world rocked.

Despite this effort, I must admit that I wasn’t successful in figuring it all out before I reached the end. She also reveals dark secrets about their marriage that lead Joe to believe that Ben poses a threat to all of them. The second issue I had with this novel was also character related: I felt like something more was going to happen with the son, William, and it just never did. If you’re a reader who considers that fair play important, you’ll want to avoid LIES—you will very likely be frustrated by its bizarre and melodramatic finale. He's also rather meek, mild-mannered, considerate of others and unbelievably too forgiving, but a likable guy nonetheless who always, always plays by the rules. We never actually realize the intrusive nature of that lovely convenience held constantly in the palm of our hand. Honestly, Joe acts like he is punch drunk, reeling from one disclosure to the next technology headache, from spyware, tracking devices, Bluetooth, forensic analysis of text messaging right through to metadata (“data about data”). Joe Lynch will be brought to his senses as he finds himself on the receiving end of technology that outsmarts him at every step.

As Joe fights to prove his innocence, he comes to realize his happily ever after has been built on lies. Because this was a character-driven thriller — one in which you had one main character, fighting not just for his liberty but, perhaps, even for his life — a lot of how successful it was or wasn't hinged on whether you cared about said character. Has Joe just caught his wife in an affair with Ben, one of the wealthiest, successful business men he knows? It has the same license plate as mum’s car… Just as Joe and William realize it is Joe’s wife Mel driving, it pulls off the road into a parking garage. in this book technology and social media both helped and hurt Joe, and I’m not sure if it was worth the pay off.

Days later and unable to make contact with Ben the news from his fragile wife, Beth, that he has disappeared and gone incommunicado puts friendships under strain with Joe and Mel both knowing just a little too much about his final movements before the disappearance. The perfect family, the perfect life all comes crashing down when Joe becomes involved in a missing person’s case that leads to a police investigation where Joe becomes the main suspect of foul play.

As William is engaging in one of his preferred pastimes — watching the vehicles jet by in the stream of busy London traffic — he spots his mom’s car. I read Lies with four of my book buddies, Melisa, Holly, Berit, and Mack, and it was just the type of delicious thriller I love to read and discuss with friends.

Stacy Willingham’s masterful use of dual timelines adds intrigue and atmosphere to this compelling mystery, while her immersive writing draws readers into our protagonist’s increasingly unstable state of mind. Logan will take readers on quite the tension-filled ride through our present day dependency on the internet and the lock-in of technology. But when he unexpectedly sees his wife's car ahead of them, he decides to follow her - and ends up witnessing her secret rendezvous with another man.

Tim was born in Berkshire and studied in London and Cardiff before becoming a national newspaper journalist. The more Joe tries to clear his name, the more the police believe he is responsible for another man’s life. So what the reader is left with from that initial opening is having to wade through all the lies upon lies that pile up for the rest of the book. At this point, Joe kinda comes to his senses and does what he should have done before — takes his son and tries to get the hell out of there.
