Macbeth by William Shakespeare Summary, Themes, and Analysis Macbeth by William Shakespeare Summary, Themes, and Analysis

As the embodiment of tyranny, he must be overcome by Malcolm so that Scotland can have a true king once more.Duncan's sons Malcolm and Donalbain flee to England and Ireland, respectively, fearing that whoever killed Duncan desires their demise as well. The prophecies are that Macbeth will become the king of Scotland soon and children of Banquo, another army general, will inherit the throne in future. In the battle, Macbeth hews violently, but the English forces gradually overwhelm his army and castle. Boece portrayed Banquo as an ancestor of the Stewart kings of Scotland, adding in a "prophecy" that the descendants of Banquo would be the rightful kings of Scotland while the Weird Sisters served to give a picture of King Macbeth as gaining the throne via dark supernatural forces. Macbeth was first printed in the First Folio, but has no Quarto version– if there were a Quarto, it would probably be longer than the Folio version.

In the play Duncan is always referred to as a “king” while Macbeth becomes known as “tyrant” when he comes to the throne. He cannot accept that Banquo's descendants will become kings after him and sets out to alter the prediction by having Banquo and Fleance murdered. To make this prophecy true, he kills the king of Scotland and many other people who become a threat to his throne. He and Lady Macbeth plan to get Duncan's two chamberlains drunk so that they will black out; the next morning they will frame the chamberlains for the murder. This would reflect other Shakespeare plays existing in both Quarto and the Folio, where the Quarto versions are usually longer than the Folio versions. To answer his questions, they summon horrible apparitions, each of which offers predictions and further prophecies to put Macbeth's fears at rest.
