About this deal

Then in 2006, three new Limited Edition DVD sets appeared, which included all three films in both their theatrical and Extended versions, along with a trio of new behind-the-scenes documentaries produced by Costa Botes. GiCocu, Dither, MaskTools, and RemoveGrain are all plugins for AviSynth that come packaged in ZIP files. Several months later, in 2002, 2003, and 2004, the studio followed with the films in their Special Extended Editions, each of which made their debut on the DVD format.

Each film and its commentaries are spread across two BD-50 discs and the remaining documentaries and Appendices content is spread across three standard DVD discs. The caves in which we first find Golem have never looked so detailed as they do in 4k HDR, adding levels of depth in the shadows that were not so evident before. The work Jackson and company put into this restoration clearly shows, and there's every chance it will bring new viewers into the fold while helping existing fans recapture the feeling of experiencing Middle Earth for the very first time. This removes a bit of the oversaturation-look of yellow and neon-green, and makes the movie look less cyan-tinted in certain parts, with skies and water looking more natural. And it doesn’t seem like the color graders had to boost contrast to add sharpness (a trick that can punch up black levels to give the appearance of sharpness), rather, there is a smooth range of grey and color values that express the expanded color depth of 4k Blu-ray. However, if you want to watch the movie on a Blu-Ray player (and your Blu-Ray player doesn't support a thumb drive with video files), you can burn your finished, color-corrected movie to a Blu-Ray disc. That seems like a lot, but don't worry, everything has a purpose, and it will all come together in the steps below. This change in color timing proved jarring for many fans who were distracted by oddly-colored skies, spider veins on actors, and off-color darks and lights which were truer blacks and whites in their initial theatrical release.

The Blu-Ray version of the Fellowship of the Ring: Extended Edition has a significantly altered color timing, resulting in a green hue across the entire movie.A Windows PC (I imagine this is possible on other platforms, but I haven't looked into how to do it. So if you’re considering upgrading to these films in 4K, what you have to decide is which version you want: The movies only now in two separate packages, or the movies later in one package, with Blu-rays too, and one new piece of bonus content?
