About this deal

Diarrhea is the term used when your dog passes non-formed loose or watery stool more often and in larger amounts than they would normally defecate. It is a common condition that is a sign or symptom of other diseases or issues rather than a disease itself. However, it should not be used over long periods and should never be used without first consulting your veterinarian. If your veterinarian prescribes sucralfate, try not to worry. Although it isn’t licensed for use in dogs, it is regularly used safely and effectively. As long as you make your veterinarian aware of your dog’s medical history, sucralfate could prevent the potentially severe consequences of stomach or gut ulceration. Even when giving Claritin under the supervision of a vet, watch for any side effects including vomiting, diarrhea, urinary retention, and increased thirst. f) Has your dog been around multiple other pets — including in your own home — and are those pets similarly affected?

Anti-diarrheal agents, de-wormers, and/or probiotics (bacteria that support intestinal health) may be prescribed. There are several probiotic products that may be helpful in dogs with diarrhea. As the quality and effectiveness of these products are not always known, consult your veterinarian before offering anything to your dog. Many cases of acute diarrhea respond quite readily to this conservative treatment, allowing the body's healing mechanisms to correct the problem, without the initial cause ever being established. As the stools return to normal, your dog’s regular diet can usually be transitioned from the prescribed veterinary diet over seven to ten days. Colitis – this is inflammation of the large intestine, which causes soft stools and diarrhoea, usually containing fresh blood and mucus. You should never try to figure out the dosage for your pet simply based on the label of a human medication. Once you are past the first 12 hours of fasting, you can begin offering your dog small amounts of a bland, low-fat, and easily digestible diet. Bland Diet OptionsIn addition to rest, fasting, and a bland diet, there are some other things you may find helpful in dealing with diarrhea issues at home. Probiotics

If your dog isn’t old, very young or poorly in themselves, fasting them for 24 hours can help speed up their recovery. Never ever give your dog something like Tylenol or other over-the-counter human pain meds without consulting your vet. Tylenol can be toxic or fatal to dogs in higher doses. If a dog is experiencing loose stools they may exhibit one or more of the following: ü Excessive Flatulence Probiotics are thought to work by topping up the normal bacteria and binding nasty bacteria and toxins. Probiotics can be bought at your vets or online. The seriousness of diarrhea depends on how long it persists and how many other clinical signs accompany it. If your dog has severe bloody diarrhea or is showing more generalized signs of illness such as weakness, fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, or dehydration, the cause may be more serious and medical attention should be sought as soon as possible. For example, diarrhea is one of the first signs seen in parvovirus, a viral infection that can cause life-threatening illness in susceptible dogs. "...diarrhea is one of the first signs seen in parvovirus, a viral infection that can cause life-threatening illness in susceptible dogs." How is the cause of diarrhea determined?

Metronidazole works by destroying and preventing the creation of DNA in the infecting organisms. Unlike most other drugs, metronidazole is able to treat central nervous system infections by penetrating the blood-brain barrier. If your pet is vomiting, has abdominal pain (groaning, rapid panting, avoiding being touched, etc.), and is weak. Atropine/Diphenoxylate is used by humans to manage diarrhea, and it's also used to treat diarrhea and colitis in dogs and cats. With this in mind, your vet must advise proper dosage depending on what your dog is being treated for. Other than the fact that dogs are dogs and not humans, it's also the size of your pet that matters when considering human meds for dogs. Let your dog rest and recover and avoid anything energetic until they are feeling better. If they are very lethargic then you should speak to your vet. Note: You should never give Claritin to your dog if they’re pregnant or if they are suffering from liver disease.

When in doubt, when concerned, or when the diarrhea extends beyond a day or two, despite your best at-home efforts, your best bet is to have your pet — and their poo — evaluated by your veterinarian. No amount of internet searching and no number of trial and error home remedy attempts can compete with the comprehensive history taking, thorough physical examination, diagnostic testing, and the ability to prescribe safe and effective medications or supplements that only your veterinarian can offer. Dehydration is a Big Concern Important: Seek emergency veterinary care immediately. Can Dogs Take Human Medicine: Is It Really Safe?Your pet’s hydration status and electrolyte levels should be monitored. Your veterinarian may monitor your pet to be sure that the medication is working. Monitor your pet for sedation level and for serious side effects at home. Metronidazole is often used in combination with other antibiotics to improve its spectrum of activity, which is especially useful in cases where multiple bacterial species are identified. Metronidazole (also known by the brand names Flagyl, Metizol, Protostat, Metrogel) is a strong antibiotic primarily used as an antidiarrheal to treat inflammation of the large intestine. It’s also used for other illnesses and conditions in dogs, cats, and horses, as well as to treat bacterial infections in humans. It is often prescribed in combination with other antibiotics. If your dog has diarrhea or an upset stomach, it’s best to use a dog diarrhea medication or stomach upset aid. Moreover, both in vivo and in vitro studies found it to be safe and sometimes effective for different conditions.
