About this deal

GennaRose Nethercott's first novel, Thistlefoot, "reimagines Baba Yaga as a Jewish woman living in an Eastern European shtetl in 1919, during a time of civil war and pogroms." [22] Indeed, her world is a largely unforgiving one and Marinka makes mistakes which sometimes cannot be repaired but I loved the writer more for making these choices and agree when Anderson states that: ‘life is full of joy and sorrow, loneliness and companionship, pride and regret’. For Marinka, the world is selfish as much as it is alluring, warm as much as it is cruel and complex and as much as it is clear. No wonder then, with her blustering knee-jerking approach to it, I am drawn so conflictingly to her for she represents many of the qualities that I saw in myself as a teenager. She makes mistakes aplenty, often won’t accept the responsibility and blames others, immediately regrets some of her actions but chooses to not learn from her mistakes: she is more human than most. The play’s music is spellbinding, with a captivating score by Alexander Wolfe that journeys from New Orleans to Eastern Europe, to the stars and beyond. Every song serves a purpose (often not the case in a musical adaptation), all accompanied by instruments played by the actors themselves – everything from flute to accordion, saxophone to electric guitar – proving themselves truly multi-talented. Post-concert talks: hear from the creative team behind the production after the following 7pm performances in the Queen Elizabeth Hall: Wed 13, Fri 22 & Thu 28 Dec.

Filled with warmth and spun from gossamer threads of magic. I loved it!” - Peter Bunzl, author of Cogheart Remember, a person’s destiny might be written in the stars, but how they get there is up to them. Schools Shows

About Sophie Anderson

French musician Christian Vander adapted the work Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh by his band Magma for performance by children's choirs into Baba Yaga La Sorcière. The recording of a concert on 15 October 1995 was released on CD in 1996. This is a shortened version of the piece, whose Kobaian lyrics have been rewritten by Gaston Tavel so that they can be easily interpreted by a children's choir. The portrayal of death, the afterlife, loss, grief, acceptance and joy is done in such a delicate, yet honest way. The production opens up the conversation and invites the audience (metaphorically) to question their own understanding of mortality.
