About this deal

Some suggestions for the name are brilliantly barmy; there seems little substance to the theory that the name derives from the fact that the initials IC for ice-cream match the pig Roman numerals for 99. There are plenty of lovely things to eat to cool down but few beat whipped ice cream in a cone served with a chocolate flake. Recent weeks have seen a surge in demand for a classic, soft-serve ice cream cone topped with the crumbly sweet treat, leaving ice cream vans short of supply. The ‘Flake’ part of its name comes from the fact that it’s served with a Cadbury Flake perched inside. To dismiss two quickly: a Flake is not 99mm long – it predates decimalisation, for one thing – and for most of its history it cost considerably less than 99p.

MORE : Rochelle Humes and Craig Doyle gag over baked bean and Worcester sauce flavoured ice-creams: ‘It’s like being on I’m A Celeb! As for the ’99’ part, Cadbury explains: ‘In the days of the monarchy in Italy, the King has a specially chosen guard consisting of 99 men, and subsequently anything really special or first class was known as ’99’ – and that his how ’99’ Flake came by its name. The chocolate flake may have reminded the ice cream sellers of the long dark feather cocked at an angle in the conscripts' Alpini Regiment hats.Cadbury's were meant to have dropped Flake Girl in 2004, the BBC commenting that "her genuine enjoyment … seemed out of step in an age in which knowing irony and parody had become the norm". She hasn't gone altogether, however, appearing recently in an aquatic and impeccably silly Egyptian advert, as well as in this year's hypnotic and very beautiful offering. According to the trademarked Mr Whippy ice cream company, their ice cream is "made primarily from skim milk and cream". As Cadbury itself admits, it does not fully know how the 99 came to be and the Oxford English Dictionary has questioned Cadbury's lines.

A 99 Flake, 99 or ninety-nine [1] is an ice cream cone with a Cadbury Flake inserted in the ice cream.Cadbury have similarly suggested that the name could originate from another class of 99 men pre-dating the First World War. The shape of the Flake is said to have reminded Italian ice cream sellers in Britain of the feather the Boys of 99 wore in their caps. Please remember that products suitable for vegans may not necessarily be suitable for people with food allergies, as advised by The Vegan Society.

The gentle jingle of Greensleeves from a garishly converted van, a beefy-armed vendor, crisply anaemic cone, turdy curly ice-cream and chocolate spike: it's all a happy reminder of sandy summers and shrieky, milk-smeared faces. Whilst every effort has been taken to ensure the accuracy of the product information provided, products and their ingredients may change. One theory is that the name was coined by Italian immigrant ice cream sellers who wanted to honour their WW1 troops known as 'i Ragazzi del 99'.You are advised to always read the product label for ingredients, nutrition, dietary claims and allergens. The tried and tested Mr Whippy method uses a machine to slowly and continuously whip and freeze the mixture. The treat is still a popular favourite from the ice cream van with thousands - perhaps even millions - being sold every year.Examples include Notarianni, which opened in Sunderland in the 1930s and Mincellas, which started as a pitch in Boldon Colliery and is still a thriving business today in Ocean Road, South Shields. These were marketed under the name 99 Flake and sold loose in boxes rather than individually wrapped like the traditional Flake. Indeed I think it did for most of my childhood, in what seemed an unusually sensible way for grown-ups to have done things, and perhaps also a nifty reminder of how much to cadge off them to get hold of one.
