About this deal

But, the truth is that I always default to clover amour (though it took me a while to build the whole set!). They are the hook that best suits the way I crochet. However, that is just me. You might prefer something completely different. I want to use this post to explain why that is and how to go about finding your own default. What is the best crochet hook? We all crochet with a different tension too which impacts what hook we might want to choose so it’s not possible to make this an exact science. This yarn combines the warmth of wool with the easy care of acrylic, so it’s great for winter accessories. It’s made from an acrylic-wool blend, so it’s soft, affordable, and really easy to wash. Plus, this yarn comes in more than 50 different colors.

The Gauge Game: When you follow a crochet pattern, it often mentions a ‘gauge.’ Gauge is basically a fancy word for the number of stitches and rows per inch or centimeter. The right gauge ensures your project turns out the same size as the pattern says. And you want that, right? I tried it with a bunch of 6mm hooks too and found the same result.) Does it matter what material your hook is made of? I do recommend trying a bunch of different styles, as funds and opportunity allows. Because once you find ‘your’ hook, you will know it! (It really IS like a magic wand!). For example, for a typical garment, I would always go to a tapered hook, like the clover amour for anything up to about a 6mm. After that I like the lightness of a wooden hook. I love my knit pro 8mm and my plastic clover amour 12mm, and I have inline bamboo hooks in 9mm and 10mm that I like using too (I think these are knitpro too but the brand has long since worn off!!). Crochet Patterns include crochet hook sizes too. Ask the pattern designer to choose the right size if it doesn’t.Neither one is better or worse, it’s an individual choice thing again. But it is worth understanding the differences and how they can impact your crochet. What’s the difference between inline and tapered crochet hooks? Many hooks claim to have ergonomic designs and reduce repetitive strain injury risk and help with wrist health etc etc. I think these claims will work for some and not others. A hook that might ease wrist strain for one crocheter may increase it for another. When looking for the hook size in a pattern, search for the materials used or the note section to find which crochet hook is recommended. Occasionally, you may need to change the hook size used to reach the gauge the pattern calls for. What is The Most Commonly Used Crochet Hook Size? Take a look at the image above that shows all the parts of a crochet hook and what they are used for during crocheting. Crochet Needles

Crochet hooks come in many sizes and types. Crochet hooks are labeled according to size. They are always referenced in either the US or Metric sizes, which you can learn more about below in with our sizes of crochet hooks conversion chart. Crochet hooks can be made using a variety of materials including wood, aluminum, plastic, and bamboo, among others. The majority of hooks range from 5″ in length (such as the Clover Soft Touch) to 6″ (such as Susan Bates, Radiant, and Boye), to 7″ (such as the Furls Streamline Swirl). One last note about crochet hook sizes. You may have seen some tiny, tiny hooks. Those are used for making doilies etc, and are a whole different ballgame. Those steel hooks are for crocheting with crochet thread… but going by millimeter will always your best bet there as well. Flexibility Rules: If things aren’t working out, don’t hesitate to switch hook sizes mid-project. You can always start over and try another size. For best results when making a pattern, make a crochet gauge swatch that uses the stitch pattern that you’ll be working for that project. Although a pattern’s suggested gauge often measures a 4 inch square, you should make a swatch that is about 6 inches square, to allow you to measure the middle of the swatch, because measuring the foundation row or sides can affect the accuracy of your gauge measurement. This creates a more drape in the fabric and less bulk. Conversely, for toys or homewares where I may want a more opaque or dense stitch, I am more likely to go down a size or two. A size P hook is 15mm. However, some brands label P types of crochet hooks as 10mm. What Happens If I Use A Bigger Crochet Hook? If you tend to chain too tightly, you can use a 10mm or 12mm hook to make the chain stitches, and then switch to a 9mm hook to crochet the rest of the scarf.
