About this deal
JS: I’ve written a book about Coming Up which is intended for publication late spring next year to coincide with Suede’s Coming Up European tour. It features interviews with Brett and the band, plus producer Ed Buller and all the other main protagonists in the drama. And it was very much a drama. The book also features amusing ‘behind the scenes’ stories involving the band – and, more often than not, me and the band – throughout that period. It is also a personal journey into the heart of an album that I love, if not unconditionally, then as a piece of work that has ultimately survived the ravages of time, and the brutish, nasty and not so short nature of the media scrutiny that had threatened to confine the band to the dustbin of history. After much speculation Suede reformed in 2010 for a series of concerts. Three years on from their reunion gigs, Suede released their sixth album, Bloodsports. It was well received by critics and returned the band to the top ten in the UK. Their seventh album, Night Thoughts, followed in 2016 and became an even bigger critical and commercial success than its predecessor. Their eighth studio album, The Blue Hour, was released in September 2018. It became the group's first top five record since Head Music. Their ninth and most recent studio album, Autofiction, was released in September 2022. a b c d e f Roberts, David, ed. Putting all the studio recordings together and just forgetting about everything else is an astute move on the part of the record company and is a true and concise representation of what Suede were up to at the height of Britpop. Surprisingly good! Didn't have high expectations because dog man star reissue was meh at best and generally I have a distrust towards clear vinyl.

Thanks Susan for a really well written article. It was great to read something written by someone who knows more about Suede than I do! :o) Some fascinating tit-bits in there. It spawned five top 10 singles in the UK and charted at number one on the UK Albums Chart. [31] The album was certified as platinum by the BPI in January 1997. [32] It had sold 425,000 copies in the UK as of July 1997. [33] Excluding the US, where Coming Up had a later release date, year-end worldwide sales were roughly 600,000, with the top markets being the UK, Scandinavia and Japan. [34] Worldwide sales reached 1.5million by 1998. [12] The proportion of worldwide sales in the US, however was much lower than the sales of the first album. According to Nielsen SoundScan, Coming Up has sold about 40,000 copies in the US as of September 2008. [35] The record sold well in Scandinavia, with "Trash" becoming the band's first overseas number one single, topping the charts in Finland. [36] The album charted at number one in both Sweden and Denmark, and number three in Norway. [37] The album was also certified as Gold in Norway and Platinum in Sweden. [38] [39] Anderson saw the funny side of their newfound popularity, saying: "They went mad for it in Scandinavia, maybe because they're all depressed sex maniacs or something." [40] Legacy [ edit ] The record that came of all this is Suede's sunniest and most organic, but also its least substantial. On " Lonely Girls", Anderson outright repeats himself-- the song is a list of girls, coupled briefly with something that each of them does, which makes it a virtual re-write of the old B-side " Young Men". His voice was also worn by years of abuse, and he sounded a little ragged singing the otherwise buoyant hooks of " Obsessions" and " Positivity", though it's hard to begrudge him the brighter outlook he displays on those songs. Listening to all the music here, though, it's easy to hear how, by bringing songs such as the stately ballad "Simon", the strangely haunting acoustic singalong " Campfire Song", and the unusual, slightly psychedelic " Instant Sunshine" out of B-side exile, they could have pieced together a better album from these sessions. Still, A New Morning is not a bad record, and it sent the band out on a hopeful note that was strikingly at odds with much of what had preceded it.a b "Guld- och Platinacertifikat − År 1987−1998" (PDF) (in Swedish).
