About this deal

However, it’s the feel provided which is the lasting memory of the 2021 TaylorMade TP5. Most balls nowadays - in the premium golf ball market, anyway - can boast a solid combination of distance and spin but the feel of the TP5 would be hard to match, so much so that even Rory McIlroy has put this ball into play.

Because of the soft urethane cover, you would think that the Pix may struggle off the tee. However, you couldn't be more wrong, with the TP5 rivaling that of the Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1X. The Speed-Layer System is comprised of four increasingly stiff layers to produce more ball speed. The result is more carry distance off the tee, more control in the wind, and more spin around the greens.

TaylorMade TP5 Pix 2.0 Golf Balls - White

There were yet more distance increases off the tee, an area where any golfer is looking to maximize, as Golf Monthly testing conjured up an extra six yards of carry. This was thanks to slightly more speed off the face and less spin. Being based on one of the best premium golf balls on the market, the TP5 Pix certainly provides high-quality performance despite the higher price tag. Featuring a urethane cover, the Pix delivers tour-level distance from the tee box and is very workable with an iron or a wedge in hand. Having obtained a Masters in Law with Medicine from the University of Liverpool, Ed has recently changed paths into journalism and just last year achieved his NCTJ Sports Journalism Diploma with the Press Association. Joe lives in North Devon and still plays sporadically on the PGA West region circuit. His best round in recent years came earlier in 2023 where he managed a 9 under par 63 at Trevose GC in a Devon & Cornwall PGA Tournament. When it comes to the ball flight portion, both perform well. However, we will start with a slight negative for the TP5 which, for golfers with lower swing speeds, or those who already launch it low and need something that helps them get it in the air more, may not be suitable.

The new Soft-Tough Cover features an improved urethane compound and paint formulation for added durabilityThe key to achieving enhanced speed without negatively affecting spin performance comes from TaylorMade’s proprietary 5-layer ball construction. Including a Tri-Fast Core that delivers maximum carry and low drag and a Dual-Spin Cover that features an ultra-soft, highly durable cast urethane cover, TP5/TP5x offer complete tee-to-green performance without sacrifice. ClearPath Alignment™ is the most innovative visual technology in the game. Not only does it enhance visibility, but it also provides Tour-proven functionality to aid alignment on the green and help you gauge the quality of your putting stroke. The only way to see it is to play it. Like the Pix, the Tour Response Stripe also features an alignment aid, but this time in the form of a lime green and grey coloured band that wraps around the ball. TaylorMade have always been a brand that likes to think outside the box and, with this version of the Tour Response, it appears that way. Apart from one having an X on it, there really isn't much to separate the two in the looks department. However, it is a different story when it comes to feel, with the TP5 remaining noticeably softer than theTP5x. From driver through to the putter, the soft cover felt great and meant that, even when using it for the first time, making the adjustment from another brand was seamless (and could be permanent).

The key to achieving enhanced speed without negatively affecting spin performance comes from TaylorMade's proprietary 5-layer ball construction. Including a larger and more reactive Tri-Fast Core that delivers maximum carry and low drag and a Dual-Spin Cover that features an ultra-soft, highly durable cast urethane cover, TP5 offers complete tee-to-green performance without sacrifice. The ultimate result is a ball that promotes a fast launch, maximum carry distances and a steep angle of descent for extra stopping power - especially on long irons.

White / Dozen

Despite the soft cover, it remains a very durable addition to TaylorMade's range of golf balls, that didn't cut up or get scratched during the round. It's also worth noting that we felt it reacts better than other firmer golf balls on the market, making it a great addition when the greens are a tad harder. Ball Flight That's not to say the control of the Tour Response is bad; far from it in fact. Having hit a number of 50-yard pitch shots, the spin rate was around 5500rpm, a similar number to the Wilson Triad, a ball that is in a similar category.
