About this deal

The amount and complexity of the electronic components that are needed to make a phono preamp is not overwhelming either. It is quite basic. The important thing is that a few key components are of high quality. Given that our only minor qualm with its predecessor was that some competitors offered a little more in the way of absolute detail – though none performing so charmingly across the board – in theory, the Fono MM has now boarded up the only remaining possible weakness in the defence of its title. This post is a bit late as I see you have already chosen a Rega Fono (I assume it is the MM mk3 not the moving coil version). By a quirk of fate I have both the Rega Fono MM Mk3 and the Musical Fidelity V90-LPS. I have owned the Rega for quite a while but the MF came as a freebee when I recently bought a Musical Fidelity integrated amp. I've been swapping between the Fono Mk3 and V90-LPS for the past few weeks and I can't really decide which one I prefer, but what I can say is they definitely sound different to one another. I wouldn't classify myself as an audiophile but I do listen to a lot of music and know what I like / don't like. To my ears the V90-LPS sounds more open and lively but the rega is warmer and (I think) easier to listen to for long periods. If you compare the Elys and the 2M they are quite different in frequency response. The Elys is a bit darker sounding:

Rega has once again succeeded in all it set out to do. That Award-winning sound of the MK2 oozes through our speakers, yet with the lowered noise floor offering more clarity and expanding the horizons of its dynamic range. Mains pollution is the noise from amplifying silent signals. This percolates through the circuit, limiting the sonic benefits of high-end components. Fortunately, there’s a way manufacturers are reducing pollution by using top-notch DC to DC converter chips.

They are designed by some of the most passionate and experienced analog audio engineers in the industry (important!)

We could have stopped there, taken it to the photography studio and trotted off to write this review. Rega Fono MM MK3: Delicate confidence So why do you need one? Your stereo amplifier or turntable may not have one, in which case you won't be able to play records without this crucial component. Or you might just want to upgrade its sound beyond what's possible with the built-in phono stage found in amplifiers or some record players. Very little awareness of the subject, I would have to be grateful if I could find here an old model from most of the manufacturers I mentioned above. First year growing these long sweet peppers. A bit less flexible to use since you can't make stuffed peppers easily with them. Still, they taste great in stir-fry's and such.We have state-of-the-art testing facilities in Reading, London and Bath, where our team of experienced, in-house reviewers test the majority of hi-fi and AV kit that passes through our door – including phono preamps (or phono stages).

Some tests show that a slight amount of harmonic distortion is unavoidable though hardly noticeable. This is because current manufacturers make devices with small distortion specifications. Frequency ResponseWe often mention hi-fi components offering headroom for upgrades, so they continue to perform when the components around them step up a level. But rarely do we come across those that stop just shy of begging you to explore a world of opportunity, firmly nudging to try new things.
