About this deal

Wood is a popular choice for floating shelves because it is strong, durable, and comes in a variety of finishes and textures. Not to mention, floating wood shelves can be stained or painted to match the decor of the room. Hard woods like oak, maple, and walnut are often used for floating shelves, but soft woods like pine can also work well. Oak floating shelves are common choice due to their strength and stability. Because, with their minimal and sleek look, the floating shelves truly can work their magic wherever you place them. And depending on the size, they can be used for virtually anything. Wall shelves: A supporting act or the main event?

As I no longer have access to that saw at my old company, I had to think of another way. Using a portable electric saw, or a jigsaw, was out of the question, because of the rough edges. If anything, the strength of the screw can damage the shelf when there is significant weight on said shelf. Therefore, it is safer to have more standard steel screws instead of a few very strong ones.

The shelf support rails have these 7mm diameter holes in them as shown by the above photo. These holes do not have threads in them. They simply accept the screws that come through the face of the shelf as shown below. And if they aren’t spaced apart appropriately, the shelf isn’t going to be balanced. Ikea floating shelves can be cut if needed. See my article showing what’s involved. Use a Drill to Make Holes for the ScrewsHire a handyman – Finally, there is the option that I can’t speak for. You can call a handyman to help install the shelf. Such contractors charge you for the materials like screws but don’t make you shop for them. I’ve not really tried this option myself because such services would have been redundant. I used a circular saw at work (used for cutting aluminium tubing), but it wouldn’t do a full cut. The solution was to turn the shelf over, then end-to-end, for each cut, with the hassle of re-measuring each time. I managed to get better than 1mm precision. This type of shelf is very versatile and can be mounted in many rooms throughout your home. It's made with flexibility in mind, so that you can add, move or remove sections whenever you want. That way, you're able to build them with just the functions you need. This makes a great choice for your hallway, since you can make sure it has enough hooks, rails and boxes for everyone in your home. Finally, I decided to try an angle grinder. I used a thin cutting disc, with a piece of aluminium tube as a guide, and didn’t cut too much at once. I did a practice cut and was pleased to see that I got a very clean edge.
