About this deal

There are over 40 books in the Discworld series, of which four are written for children. The first of these, The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, won the Carnegie Medal. Funny Animal: A deconstruction. Being able to talk doesn't make the rats that much like humans; they can't wear waistcoats, they instinctively eat their dead, mark things by widdling on them, and practically everything in the world is out to get them. Combat Pragmatist: Darktan, especially in the fight against the terrier. In particular, biting its testicles. This Is My Human: Maurice regards the stupid-looking kid as a necessary prop and an occasionally handy pair of hands.

Maurice asks Malicia about the fairy tales, "stories about little people with wings that go tinkle-tinkle?" a reference to Tinkerbell in James Barrie's novel Peter Pan. Maurice – an intelligent cat who leads the group of rats. He is cunning and manipulative and has a very good (but cynical) understanding of how the world works. Late in the novel, he guiltily admits that he accidentally ate one of the intelligent rats of the Clan early in their history, and thus became sentient himself. The Amazing Maurice had its premiere at the Manchester Animation Festival on 13 November 2022, and was released in United Kingdom on 16 December, by Sky Cinema. It is set to be released in the United States by Viva Pictures on 3 February 2023, after being delayed from a 13 January 2023 release. [13] [14] It had its American premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. [15] Home media [ edit ]Aboveground, Maurice makes similar observations, including that many of the rat tails the rat catchers display as proof of their successful hunting are in fact shoelaces. Maurice and Keith meet the mayor's daughter Malicia and introduce her to the talking rats. Maybe Ever After: Keith and Malicia agree to be friends at the end and don't engage in any explicit romance, but Malicia is uncharacteristically tongue-tied when asking Keith to stay in Bad Blintz and he is at least partially thinking of her when considering that he might have a future there. But something is not quite right towards the middle. I think things Played with regarding the Clan's and Spider's various opinions on how much the life of a keekee (= non-talking rat) is worth.

Maurice is blessedly short on fart jokes* and long on Pratchett's brand of homespun philosophical irony. My father shouted a lot and sent for Blunkett and Spears, too,’ said Malicia. ‘They’re the rat-catchers! And you know what that means, don’t you?’ Rats! They chased the dogs and bit the cats, they --" is a reference to Robert Browning's 1842 version of The Pied Piper of Hamelin: "Rats!/ They fought the dogs and killed the cats,/ And bit the babies in the cradles". Near the end of the book, this line is changed to "We fight dogs and we chase cats..." and sung by the army of rats. In the armed services, a military cadence or cadence call is a traditional call-and-response work song where one person sings the lines and the rest of the group responds. It is sung while running or marching to keep the cadence and keep spirits up. In the United States, these cadences are sometimes called jody calls or jodies, after Jody, a recurring character in many traditional cadences; Jody refers to the man with whom a serviceman's wife/girlfriend cheats, while he is deployed. Usually the songs poke fun at other regiments, the enemy, army life and what the soldiers' girlfriends/wives are up to while the soldier is away in the army. Pratchett used this in Night Watch as well. Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Sardines is the quirkiest and most eccentric of the rats, always laughing and joking and dancing everywhere. While other rats don't always take him seriously, they can't deny that he, in many ways because of his quirks, is exceptionally good at what he does. A 'Special Edition' by Corgi Children's contains an introduction by Rob Wilkins and a look at how Terry Pratchett first imagined 'The Amazing Maurice.'The Amazing Maurice was released on DVD and Blu-ray by Dazzler Media (under license from Universal Pictures) on 1 May 2023. [16] Reception [ edit ] Box office [ edit ] But somehow this one passed me by. I think it's because it's a stand-alone within the Discworld universe, and those have never been my favourites. Also, I'm not yet sold on the young-adult Discworld books. Before The Amazing Maurice I'd only read The Wee Free Men and I wasn't convinced, so I felt little urgency to grab a copy.
