The Last Party: The twisty thriller and instant Sunday Times The Last Party: The twisty thriller and instant Sunday Times

Ffion and Leo head over to The Shore, a fancy property owned by Rhys, to inform his family he has been found. I loved the tense atmosphere in this book; I read this book in one night which wasn’t my intention when I sat down to read it!

Seren goes to Clemmie’s lodge to talk to the twins and Caleb and let the twins know they need to bring their dad a sandwich to eat, per their mom’s request. While the movement through time and perspective can sometimes be a little jarring, and makes the novel read slowly at first, the resolution—of not only the mystery, but also the relationships and side plots—offers a deep acceptance of human fragility and complexity. The tiny community is her home, so the suspects are her neighbors, friends and family―and Ffion has her own secrets to protect. A gripping portrait of two fractured people merges with believable plot twists, and the author perfectly captures the ennui of a small town where gossip can destroy lives. A surprised ending and maybe a continuation of the main two characters has me anxiously waiting for the author's next book.

The Last Party: A Novel - Kindle edition by Mackintosh, Clare

In this story, an influential musician disappears, and later found dead, after a New Year’s Eve party that he was hosting. We find out there was an incident in his high school years where he was bullying a classmate, Ceri – who is now the postwoman. Their working relationship doesn’t start well because on New Year’s Eve they had a one-night stand using fake names. Brooks is a pro at building suspense even if it plays out in some rather spectacularly yucky episodes, one involving a short spear that takes its name from “the sucking sound of pulling it out of the dead man’s heart and lungs. Both Clare's second and third novels, I See You and Let Me Lie, were number one Sunday Times bestsellers.
