About this deal

Fibre optic internet is better than normal wiring as it is immune to electromagnetic interference and there’s less signal loss along the way. You could conceivably just keep adding nodes to cover as much area as you liked with no slowdown or loss of signal. But some devices, such as printers and set-top TV boxes, only support wired connections, and connecting these or a PC to your extender via Ethernet will give you a more reliable and often faster connection than wireless. Every home has a WiFi blackspot or two; back bedrooms, attics or extensions where the signal just can’t get to. Both sets of devices will be slightly different per brand or even per product, but you should be looking at an average of about 50-75ft.

The WiFi 6 Repeater 5400 will be overkill for many people, but if you must get a high-speed connection to a distant corner of the house, nothing else out there comes close. I used the app to set them up and they worked without any setting up and now I have wifi everywhere in my house. You can also blacklist certain devices so they'll never be able to connect to the WiFi, a handy threat to have in your back pocket if someone hasn't done their chores. They communicate wirelessly with each other, and each one acts as a Wi-Fi access point to deliver a good signal to places where a single router wouldn’t reach.

Powerline can be more reliable than a straight Wi-Fi repeater where the signal is really weak, and it’s nearly always the most effective choice for reaching an outbuilding or distant home office.

Our only gripe is that it’s pretty bulky and, in a typical British double-wall socket with central switches, it gets in the way of accessing the socket’s on/off switch. The RE450 isn’t the cheapest Wi-Fi 5 extender, but it’s faster and more stylish than the budget competition.

MU-MIMO technology, nova can communicate with multiple wireless devices at the same time, and significantly outperforms traditional routers in communication efficiency. If it’s a powerline system, we connect the base unit to the main router via gigabit Ethernet and, again, situate the remote unit according to the instructions. Up until recently, most extenders and Powerline kits only went as far as the Wi-Fi 5 standard, but we’re seeing a growing number that go faster with Wi-Fi 6 support. They work reasonably simply: you plug in a repeater and it will pick up the WiFi signal from your router, copy it, and rebroadcast it to new corners of your house. That’s much better coverage than I’d been getting from my old standalone router: before installing the system, the signal in the bedroom had been iffy, and I’d been unable to get a connection at all in the bathroom. For less than the cost of a regular mid-range router, you get a full set of three Wi-Fi nodes, ready to distribute wireless connectivity to the far reaches of your home.

Similar to its cheaper sibling, this model is easy to set up and configure using TP-Link’s Tether app, and it supports OneMesh technology for seamless roaming around the house. You know they're on thanks to tiny LED on top which is, thankfully, not too bright (so they won't keep you awake in bed). It only took a second to connect from one node to the next, but it wasn't something I noted with any of the other devices. The newer Wi-Fi 6 kits will give you even more performance if you have Wi-Fi 6 devices, but if not this is a great solution. TP Link have found the right balance between offering a wide range of content and making it simple enough to find everything you need. The device you do this with will become your primary method of controlling your network, so make sure you do it on a prominent device that you can control. Are you finding that you can’t stream TV or have a video chat in the more distant corners of your house? The wide casing means you probably won’t be able to plug anything into the adjacent power socket, but the softly glowing blue ring that encircles the WPS button is quite attractive, and it helpfully turns red to let you know if there’s a problem with the connection. Setup is no different to the other mesh networks I've already described and the app is easy to use and offers you a lot of control over your WiFi. And the connection was still perfectly fast enough to browse the web, ping sensibly sized files back and forth over my home network and even stream 4K video.
