Alfred the Great would have certainly enjoyed a sumptuous combination of fresh fruits enriched with exotic spices such as ginger. Founded in 2018 by three good friends - Robin Horrez, James Gurney and Phil Howarth (who would act as Master Distiller) - Hawkridge Distillery is situated in the small village of Compton in the middle of the North Wessex Downs, not quite equidistant between the triangle of Swindon, Oxford and Reading. Smaller and sweeter than today’s cultivated strawberries, they were a rare delicacy, providing a subtle burst of sweet berry flavour – very much like our gin. In the 9th Century, ginger was a luxury experienced almost exclusively by the Royal Courts and was most likely imported from the Mediterranean region by spice merchants. With a focus on Victorian recipes and featuring an incredibly distinctive bottle, the team produces a selection of gins, vodka and more recently a rum.

Despite the vibrant pink bottle, this 'Aphrodisiac' gin is a clear spirit which uses a similar set of botanicals to the Victorian Botanical Blend but with the addition of jasmine, lavender and fresh mint. Wild strawberries, known to the Anglo-Saxons as ‘streowberigan’ grew wild on grasslands and open woodland. The rich flavour comes from the finest molasses that the Caribbean has to offer, matured for five years and finished in bourbon oak casks, then blended to create this warming masterpiece. The bottle is beautiful with a bluey green hue, and the contents live up to the exterior with a light citrus flavour.But for James Gurney, Robin Horrex and Phil Howarth, it was the start of something extremely exciting. I have worked with and watched the revolution of this business since it’s inception and as one of their trial members I have been delighted with the quality, flavour and design of every gin they have produced, so much so I commissioned them to produce a gin for my business.
