How does the environment factor into the local folklore of Butangen and villager perceptions of the outside world? The story proper then is set centuries later, in and around Butangen, and basically begins on New Year's Day, 1880. Flash forward to the present day, and we meet Astrid Henke, a local girl and descendant of the conjoined twins, who longs to escape from the restrictive, uneventful life in the village where all that is expected of her is to have children and work on the family farm. She rejects two offers of marriage “ precisely because it would all be the same,” and secretly dreams of breaking free of her daily drudgery to travel and achieve success on her own terms. There was quite a large featured cast of characters in this sprawling saga, whose very nature and essence had been so effortlessly captured with such total authority and intuition, that many of them were difficult to relate to and would have taken a lifetime to understand. I became completely invested in them, to the point where I could imagine myself sharing a place at the Hekne family table, or sitting for so long in the freezing church, listening to Pastor Schweigaard’s lengthy sermon, that I lost the feeling in my extremities. Their taciturn and dogmatic nature belied their fragile hold on life, with their inherent stoicism and downright stubbornness getting them through the bad times, of which there were many! Norway, 1880. In a secluded village of Butangen, young Astrid Henke dreams about a life beyond the valley and beyond conventional life. She already turned down two suitors, and now is viewed as restless, of sharp nature and impossible to discipline.

Ik lees eigenlijk weinig historische fictie (als een boek op de achterflap begint met een locatie en een jaartal, bijvoorbeeld “Wyoming, 1895” haak ik al vaak meteen af) maar de fraaie cover van een houten staafkerk en het vleugje bovennatuurlijke sprak me aan bij dit boek. Mytting zijn schrijfstijl is eerst vrij kabbelend en trok me de eerste honderd pagina’s niet enorm de wereld van De Zusterklokken in. Na het sprookjesachtig begin, waarin uitgelegd wordt hoe de klokken uit de titel gegoten zijn door de opoffering van een voorvader van Astrid, krijgen we via korte hoofdstukken inzicht in het Scandinavische dorpsleven in 1880 in Butangen. Over vreemden wordt in het dorp gezegd: “Eenmaal in Butangen raakten ze ofwel getrouwd of ze werden neergestoken”.
Lars created for me an eloquent and lyrical story where the writing was intense, full of heart and raw passion, skilled in the imagery of words, replete and rich in atmosphere, and exhilarating in its visually descriptive narrative and dialogue. Once, in the early 1800s, an artist had come to the village and made drawings of the church, but he made little impression. Soon afterwards there had been another visitor—probably unconnected to the artist—who seemed to have some hidden agenda, and who quizzed a villager about the story of the Sister Bells, but he too was never heard of again, and soon nobody was sure whether either man had been there at all. The small windowpanes still cast their delicate light over the church pews, but they grew loose and let the north wind blow straight in on the Eucharist.
In what ways are the main characters alike? In what ways are they different? Are they more similar than they are different, or more different than they are similar? Wat een magnifieke roman is dit! De Nederlandse vertaling van Lars Mytting’s laatste roman uit 2018 is net uit. De Zusterklokken is een smaakmakend eerste deel van een nieuwe familietrilogie die de Noorse auteur van succesvolle titels als De man en het hout, De vlamberken en Paardenkracht ons brengt. Een prachtig, ietwat mythisch doch heel realistisch verhaal wordt gecombineerd met een opbouwende onderhuidse spanning, ongelooflijke zeggingskracht en een wondermooi maar helder taalgebruik. Ook de vertaalster Paula Stevens zal hier zeker haar bijdrage aan hebben geleverd. Many people believe that the metric system isn't so well suited to construction work. Mytting’s exploration of the answers to these and other questions results in a delightful immersion for the reader. The mystical otherworldliness of the village is convincing and captivating. The sense of the past still existing in the present reminded me of Thomas Hardy’s haunted poems. Eerie shivers and ghostly whispers of bygone times and people ripple throughout the novel. I don't think this author has any flaws. His characters are fully developed and fulfill their imaginative roles without being false at any time. His setting is rich with details and knowledge of the community he comes from. And his expertise in the history of Norwegian craft and woodwork comes through in this plot and novel. I loved reading about stave churches and their place in the lives of the Norwegian communities, and their mixing of pagan and Christian rituals.
