About this deal

Whether you want to add some unique details or change up the colors, there are many ways to make your toy train your own. Lay the Template: Place the printed template pieces on the rolled-out gingerbread dough. Use a sharp knife or a gingerbread house cutter to cut around the template shapes. Remember to cut out all the necessary pieces, including walls, roof, and any decorative elements. I should mention here that we bought all of these kits without reading the boxes first - and this was the first time we came to regret it. We realised we'd need an egg to make the icing and a piping bag. We had the first, not the latter - but we decided to give it a go anyway.

Design a rooftop: Add texture to your roof with edible shingles. Anything from breakfast cereal to Necco wafers will work! Just remember to start at the bottom and layer the rows as you work your way to the top. From gumdrop paths and candy cane fences to snow-covered roofs and marshmallow snowmen, gingerbread houses are a festive, hands-on activity that doubles as a great way to decorate for the holiday season. If building a gingerbread house has felt daunting to you in the past, use this gingerbread house template and guide to make and assemble a gingerbread house from scratch. And, who knows, you may just be inspired to host your own gingerbread house decorating party next year! Our finished but rough-around-the-edges Asda gingerbread house before it collapsed (Image: Emily Collis/BirminghamLive) There are no rules here—just have fun! Make memories by hosting a decorating party for friends and family. Here are some decorating ideas for inspiration: Also, each child should plan to make one train car or engine. Trying to build an engine plus two cars (as you see in my photos) will take most kids longer than their interest will last. Christmas Train Supplies

The tube was also the same, so we had the same issue reaching the nooks and crannies. It was a bit harder to decorate the sides with the house in the tray and it started to look a bit of a mess. We attempted to draw the snowman from the box but the icing was too soft and he melted into a blob - yet the messier it got, the more fun. The three finished supermarket gingerbread houses. Asda's sadly collapsed as we tried to move it (Image: Emily Collis/BirminghamLive) With the patterns and designs below, you can easily find one that fits your style and skill level. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced crocheter, you can make your own adorable train toy with ease. Plus, these handmade locomotives’ lead cars and wagons offer little, whimsical hiding spots for small presents. They will likely make the holidays extra special and magical.

Pipe icing along the top of all the walls, then place one side of the roof on top. Place something underneath the bottom ridge to support it. Pipe icing along the top ridge, then place the other roof panel on top, again supporting it underneath. Leave to set completely before removing the supports.Gather Ingredients: Before you begin, gather all the ingredients you’ll need, such as gingerbread dough, royal icing, candy decorations, and any other desired embellishments. For instance, there are gingerbread trains that are ideal to make and display on Christmas. They make great ornaments for your fireplace, tables, and shelves. Use icing to attach white chocolate buttons to the centre of each wheel. Once set, cut 8 x lengths strawberry pencil to fit the length of each train compartment and attach to the chocolate buttons, along the wheels.

Display and Enjoy: Once your gingerbread house is completely set and decorated, display it proudly as a centerpiece or festive decoration. Don’t forget to share it with friends and family during your holiday celebrations! Assemble the House: Begin by assembling the walls of the gingerbread house. Use royal icing as glue to attach the pieces together, holding them in place until they set. Repeat this process for the roof and any other decorative elements. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface; knead until even in color and smooth (not crumbly or dry), adding more flour if needed. Form into a log. Cut into five equal pieces and wrap in plastic. Step 4: Roll Out the Dough Start construction. Transfer one third of the royal icing into a large piping bag and cut off a 1cm tip. Build the train station. Pipe a line of royal icing on the cake board where you want the rear gabled end wall of the station to sit. Place this wall piece on top of the line to fix it. Pipe icing up one side of the wall and attach a rectangular side wall. Use a mug or glass to hold it in place. Attach the front gabled end (with the cut-out opening) and the remaining side wall with icing in the same way, supporting on both sides. Leave for 15 minutes to set slightly.

The Lidl kit took us about 45 minutes from start to finish, but overall, we were really pleased with the finished result. I actually felt a bit guilty eating it. So which was best? Firstly, you can experiment with different yarn colors and textures to create a train that truly stands out. Bake Gingerbread Pieces: Carefully transfer the gingerbread pieces onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake them according to your gingerbread recipe’s instructions. Let them cool completely.
