About this deal

Good for breastfed babies: The bottles are described as having a natural milk flow, which can be controlled by the baby. They claim this creates an experience close to breastfeeding. A slow flow teat on a bottle may also help. A fast flow teat can cause the milk to flow too fast and continuously. A slow flow nipple may be more similar to breastfeeding as it helps the milk to flow more slowly and also allows your baby to pause feeding, in the same way as breastfeeding. Bottom line, no one type of bottle is best. Choose one and see how your baby likes it. Some babies will adapt to the bottle straight away, others might need a bit of time to learn the new skill of feeding from that bottle, so don't give up too soon. Each time you change to a new style of bottle, your baby has to start learning all over again.'

This can be very distressing for parents. Colic can start when a baby is only a few weeks old but usually stops by 6 months (5). Some babies with colic have excess gas and so the theory behind anti colic bottles is tominimise the amount of air swallowed. Effective winding can help too. Signs your baby may have colic (5); Infrequent/skipped feedings (due to nipple pain, teething, pacifier overuse, busy mum, return to work, baby suddenly sleeping longer, scheduling, supplementing, abrupt weaning, etc.). There’s no definite best time to introduce a first bottle but it’s often recommended to wait until your baby is at least 4-6 weeks old, if you plan to continue breastfeeding. This is to allow breastfeeding to become established and to build up your milk supply (1). Will my baby take a bottle easily?A plugged duct will typically feel more painful before a feeding and less tender afterward, and the plugged area will usually feel less lumpy or smaller after nursing. Nursing on the affected side may be painful, particularly at letdown. Breastmilk is warm so your baby is likely to prefer the bottle (whether breast or formula) at a similar temperature. Babies could take part up to 7 months old and we know colic symptoms resolve themselves in older babies. Colic often improves by 6 months (5).

The Air Ventilation System reduces the intake of air, ultimately reducing the potential causes of gas or colic. The 5 colic symptoms they looked at included; crying, folding legs up to stomach, frowning and discomfort, face turning red and pain spasms. Lansinoh® bottles and NaturalWave® Nipples are dishwasher safe. However, for longer life of the NaturalWave® Nipple, we recommend hand washing. To avoid buying and trying lots of different bottles, try talking to other parents and finding out what works for them. Be objective and try not to be influenced by marketing claims. If you’re looking for an anti-colic bottle, most now offer some anti-colic features.

These bottles are compatible with the Medela breast pump and can be used for storing and transporting milk as well as feeding. They are available with slow flow teats. What else is important in a bottle? Lansinoh® bottles and NaturalWave® Nipples can be sanitized by boiling in water for five minutes. Please be sure that no parts of the bottle or attachments touch the bottom or the sides of the pan as this could cause them to melt. There are usually no systemic symptoms for a plugged duct, but a low fever (less than 101.3°F / 38.5°C) may be present. The evidence: A research project was carried out with 30 babies with colic type symptoms in 2010. 20 babies were given the Born Free bottles and 10 babies continued with their usual bottles. 85% of the 20 babies showed improvement with their colic symptoms. Any parent who bottle-fed their baby will tell you that not every bottle is the same. Even the size of the bottle can help – or hinder – your baby accepting it for feeding.

Many parents are also looking for their bottles to help with symptoms of colic and many bottles claim to do so. What is colic? Breastfeeding is a learnt skill. If you experience nipple soreness beyond a slight tenderness when your baby latches on you may need to make some adjustments so you can be comfortable and enjoy breastfeeding your baby. Uncomfortable attachment of the baby at the breast when feeding is often the cause of sore nipples – a temporary but painful condition. This was an online diary completed by parents and the parent’s opinion on whether symptoms improved. Parents had to document minutes spent fussing, sleeping or crying. The reason Lansinoh’s breast pads are so absorbent is that they contain a fine powder within the construction of the pad that is a super absorbent polymer (SAP). When the milk lets down and begins to flow, the powder turns into a gel, which is the action that is keeping you dry. If you noticed gel on your breast, it probably means that this leaked from the pad onto your skin either because the pad was torn or ripped prior to your using it or because the pad was too saturated with milk. This could happen after a particularly big letdown or after wearing the pad for many hours. One option is changing your pad more frequently if you think that could be the cause. Because our pads are so absorbent, it may not seem as though you are leaking a lot of milk but this is sometimes the case. See your GP if you’re concerned about your baby and nothing seems to help or if your baby is more than 4 months old with the symptoms of colic. Which bottles are best for breastfed babies? Most bottles who market themselves as good for breastfeeding babies, tend to promote their similarity to breastfeeding and anti colic mechanisms. Here is the low down on the most popular brands and their claims. Good for breastfeeding babies: Dr Brown says the contoured breast-like shape of the teats have been designed to encourage a proper latch and mimic breastfeeding. They claim the soft silicone teat also offers a ‘more comfortable feeding experience’ and is designed to help babies switch between the breast and bottle. The level 1 teat provides a slow milk flow. Feed at roughly the same time as usual. Make sure your baby is ready for some milk but not overly hungry.
