Ecclestone gradually took over F1 while running BrabhamWhere the programme makers have really done themselves proud is in assembling a broad collection of archive footage which goes far beyond what is contained in the substantial catalogue produced by Ecclestone’s FOM operation. Contemporary news and current affairs reports flesh out the details of the stories which Ecclestone tends to relate in simplistic terms. It doesn't help that Carmichael is much too old in the part. The Angry Young Men were starting to make waves in British theatre and cinema at the time but here all we get a mildly querulous, getting-on-somewhat man blundering and blustering from one unlikely situation to another. The three main comedic set-pieces of Jim (cue madrigal singers) playing in an impromptu musical gathering at his college superior's house, disastrously arranging the floral display of the university procession to be attended by the new college chancellor and lastly his drunkenly irreverent speech on the designated theme of "Merrie England" in front of the assembled pupils and masters all fall flat with the only time I was remotely amused being when in his drunken state he predictably finds himself in the bedroom of his torch-carrying old-maid admirer and proceeds to shoot over the proverbial open goal. Somehow, in all this, he still gets the pretty young girl although the fact that his competition is Terry Thomas in an unsympathetically written-part makes that a foregone conclusion almost from their first meeting. For the perfect excuse to grab some popcorn and get comfy for the perfect night in, DVDs offer the ideal entertainment. Watching your favourites immerses you in a vast selection of storylines and characters and for just a few hours embraces you in the heat of the action. It's not easy to present the story of a titanic and controversial figure like Bernie Ecclestone, in a documentary that is basically his side of the whole story, and make the viewer care and even sympathize with him. In this, the director of the amazing documentary movie Senna has managed to get Bernie to dial down his ability to fire away hot takes seemingly for the sake of it, and gets him to narrate his story very effectively while supported by the amazing visual delight of absolutely fantastic archive footage, much of it never before seen) with a surprising amount of grounded maturity and heartfelt emotional moments, but never failing to sneak in his dry, very British humor. skipgamer Yeah, couldn’t agree with you more. But I think I’ll probably miss this though. What Pandey did with Senna I thought was fantastic, we were leaving Australia, had a party organised and someone let me know they had a copy of the film coming up and a private cinema, it was a couple of months before it came out and I could only view it the night before the flight. I organised to leave my leaving party for two hours to go watch a film, by myself, and I loved it. I saw stuff I’d never seen before, the pacing was great. The onboards….. the screams and howls.Even with a six-hour running time (it’s advertised as eight, but that banks on 15 minutes of adverts per episode), covering 67 years of motor racing history in that time is no small feat. The story therefore hurries on in places to make room for the matters of most significance. Inevitably some details are therefore covered so briefly you wonder why they were left in at all, particularly those which only seem to have a passing connection to the Ecclestone story. The shot of a very young Damon Hill rushing up to greet his father tugs at the heart-strings, but this sequence detailing Graham Hill’s unexpected death passes by very briefly. I see that contemporary critics compared Carmichael's performance as Jim (cue madrigal singers) with that of Jerry Lewis which somehow manages to insult them both. No one else in the cast stood out for me either although they were none of them helped by the dull screenplay and stodgy direction. If this is what passed for rebelliousness in late 50's British cinema, I can only say I'm glad that the so-called kitchen sink dramas with genuinely vibrant young talent like Finney, Harvey, Bates and Courteney were just around the corner. DVDs are a great way to watch the best movies time and time again, plus they give you the option to share the experience with friends and family too. Whatever your interests, you'll find tons of films to suit your tastes plus there is also the option of DVD TV box sets to binge-watch your favourite shows. A world of movies But Bernie? I don’t really care. I care about how we got here and the history of F1. But people sometimes people might say to me “Bernie was a bad man”. But I don’t know – if all of us were to weigh up the good and the bad, Bernie is an odd one.
