About this deal

When Helen was working in distilleries she was inspired by the enthusiasm of those working in the industry and how it is all-encompassing; crafting, branding, and helping people: "It's a very creative place to be". For winter, try The Wee Farm Drover’s Gin with spiced orange ginger ale. This has a lovely, sweet warmth that would be unreal on a winter night. Again, a simple 2:1 ratio and garnish with a dried orange wheel to smash in some extra sweetness. Of the future, Lynne says: “We are focusing on building our brand and making it easier for our customers to find our spirits on the shelf – whether they are in a shop, or in a bar. There is always some development work going on at the distillery so you never know when new products might start appearing… watch this space!” The sheep-farming Stewart family have a few outbuildings that are no longer in use, and they want to use them to diversify their offerings on the farm. Red Door Gin is carefully handcrafted at Benromach Distillery in Forres, where every drop is distilled in “Peggy” – the small copper pot behind the distillery’s iconic red door.

Garnishing with a lime or lemon wedge? Give it a good squeeze before dropping it into your glass, a wedge that has not been squeezed will just float to the top and add very little to the drink. Factoid: Apparently between 75 per cent to 95 per cent of a gin’s flavour profile is based on smell. I do prefer a citrus or herbaceous style of gin, but a juniper-led gin will always be the best after a hard week’s work when you need a gin to be a GIN!

Travel

Esker have changed the thinking behind the flavours and using silver birch sap, a feature of Royal Deeside, challenged the traditional botanicals and gin recipes. As it stands, they are the only Scottish gin to use birch sap as a botanical. The scents and aromas of our gin garnish can actually improve the drinking experience and the way that we prepare and use them can actually have a big effect on the final drink. This is another North-East gin, more specifically from Udny in Aberdeenshire. The Team at Teasmith wanted to create a gin whose flavour is made from botanicals linked to their locality, and that celebrate local history. Scotland produces gin? That's right, Scotland doesn't just make the best whisky in the world, it's not bad at creating craft gins either. For example, if you were drinking a fruit flavoured gin, garnishing with that same fruit may make the drink taste too much of that single flavour masking the delicacies and the more subtle botanicals that are present in the spirit. Think of it like this, if your food is already really peppery you wouldn’t be reaching for the pepper grinder right?

The gin is also offered at Navy Strength – 58% abv. Despite this big mouthful of alcohol, it is remarkably smooth and can be happily sipped naked! As a G&T it offers hints of toffee and citrus, for the adventurous try mixing a Vesper – you won’t be disappointed. We take much care in scaling our gin from our lab stills to our beautiful 850l Carl Copper stills. We run our gins through eight slow and steady stages of distillation making our cuts with the precision that only experience can grant. After buying a copper still from Portugal, what was once a hobby has now evolved into a commercial venture, with their recent debut at the Taste of Grampian Food and Drink Exhibition being a breakthrough into the local Gin market. With gin drinking I tend to be drawn to more floral gins, or those which feature grapefruit/pink grapefruit as I enjoy the softness which it brings to the drink.

For Gins with sweet or spiced notes, like our original Esker or Esker Gold, try some zesty orange peel as the warm, rich citrus complements botanicals such as clove and cassia.

No. 10: McQueen Gin

So what have we got in the glass? Tasting notes from the competition were: “Nose: soft and mellow with bright, leafy notes, plump fruit and a subtle spice. Taste: this has a pleasant mouth feel with a good viscosity; the spirit coats the tongue and the flavours gradually unfurl. A slice of white peach. The sweet but slightly sharp raspberry gin pairs brilliantly with the sweeter peach flavours! The Chocolate Mint Gin has Liquorice, Vanilla, Mint and Chocolate, and their Mocha Gin has Grapefruit, Vanilla, Chocolate and Coffee. The latest addition from Tiree Whisky Company (the team behind Tyree Gin), Hebridean Pink Gin is distilled and bottled on the Isle of Tiree, the outermost of the Inner Hebridean islands. The family-run business is seemingly determined to be trail-blazing in the ever-expanding world of Scottish Premium Gin.
