About this deal

The film begins in England with the death of the king, Uther Pendragon. No heir is named, and so England is threatened to be torn apart by war. Miraculously, the mystical " Sword in the Stone" appears in London, with an inscription proclaiming that whomever pulls it out is the rightful King of England. Many try to remove the sword, but none succeed and the sword is soon forgotten, leaving England in dark ages. Dissertation reread time! I acquired a distaste for T.H. White sometime during my MA, and I'm not sure exactly why: rereading The Sword in the Stone, I still rather loved it, with its gentle humour and the character of the narratorial voice and its understanding of each character. I note that in my first review I noticed the way it treats Kay, which is a good sign for this dissertation... There are no gratuitous acts of violence or sex in this book. Whatever happens serves to advance the tale. No swearing, no consumerism. Sex may be alluded to but not in any vulgar or explicit way. I believe this was merely part of an enchantment. Question 1: Why did Merlin the Magician say Arthur had a heart that was big and strong? Why did it matter? I can see why the book has attained its status, but to me it is too quirky, and of its time, class and culture to be very appealing. It is perhaps the most self-indulgent book I have ever read, and peppered with anachronisms. Perhaps they are an hilariously inappropriate delight to scholars of medieval history, but for a general reader, they seem merely puzzling, and for a child, surely misleading. Merlin is a recurring character in the Kingdom Hearts series, appearing in Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts II, and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep. He is voiced by Jeff Bennett. The Sword in the Stone, a music composition for a 1939 six-part radio show composed by Benjamin Britten When Arthur was ten years old, the same stranger returned to Sir Ector’s home. He could read and write, and so Sir Ector hired him to teach his two sons. Kay could not sit still for lessons and he stopped coming. But Arthur listened with wide eyes. He learned everything. I bet you have guessed by now who that stranger was – none other than Merlin the Magician!

The film cuts to Arthur, now crowned King, sitting in the throne room with Archimedes, feeling completely unprepared to take the responsibility of royalty. Overwhelmed by the cheering crowd outside, Arthur calls out to Merlin for help, who arrives (in 20th-century attire) and is delighted to find that Arthur is the King that he had seen in the future. Merlin tells the boy that he will rise and lead the Knights of the Round Table, accomplishing many amazing feats and becoming one of the most famous figures in literature and even in motion pictures (such as this film). Ector, Kay, Pellinore, Arthur, and Archimedes travel to London for the tournament. Moments before Kay's match, Arthur realizes that he has forgotten Kay's sword at their inn, which is now closed because of the tournament. Archimedes notices a sword in a stone in a nearby churchyard and points it out to Arthur, who pulls the sword from the stone, unwittingly fulfilling the Sword in the Stone’s prophecy. card cover>. However, T.H. White decided to write a fantasy about the boyhood of Arthur, which had not been covered by Malory. In The Sword in the Stone, the boy who will become King Arthur is tutored by Merlyn, to prepare him for the use of power and royal life. Following Malory, T.H. White places this loosely in Medieval England, of which he was very knowledgeable. Therefore much of the book describes medieval culture and pastimes, such as hunting, falconry and jousting. Later, they practice jousting and Wart bemoans the fact that he will never become a knight. Following this, King Pellinore arrives and tilts against Grunmore Grummerson, a knight in the service of Ector. Pellinore loses and the match devolves into a brawl. After this, on a dreary day, Wart decides he wants to become a hawk, which Merlyn allows him to do. He runs into Cully, Kay's falcon, in a group of militaristic falcons and is forced to demonstrate bravery to them. He succeeds and is celebrated with a song from the company. Although it might appear as a novel for young readers, it’s a satire on myth and chivalric nature of warfare, and the idealized and romanticized version of the legend. May be also “a growth-novel” tale of Arthur. There were a lot of comical scenes. For example, Wart’s first meeting with King Pellinore, with a knight dressed in full armor is first heavily romanticized and soon we see he is clumsy and wearing spectacles and accidentally drops his lance several times. He is a really a

Come, sword,” said the Wart. He took hold of the handles with both hands, and strained against the stone… but nothing moved… Kay!” said the Father again in a stern voice. “I will ask you one more time. Where did you get this sword?”

This is one of the most challenging books aimed at children. The original wasn't meant for them, but this edition, gorgeously illustrated by Dennis Nolan is. Even adults may find it heavy going at times, with its old-fashioned, British text, filled with long passages of description, dialects, advanced vocabulary, literary and historical references, and a very dry wit. White during the same period Tolkien was writing The Lord of the Rings and C.S Lewis creating the world of Narnia—other epic, fantasy novels, which gave birth to the new movement of magical realism—a movement in which magical elements are part of an otherwise realistic environment. The Once and Future King is such an Arthurian fantasy novel. The message of the story is that you can try your hardest but the outcome would be the same as everything is fixed, so why bother?!

The Sword in the Stone is a novel by the English author T.H. White. It was published in 1938 as a stand-alone work, but it later became the first part of a tetralogy, called “The Once and Future King”. Although broadly categorised as Fantasy, in fact it is hard to define. The Sword in the Stone is very much one of a kind, and does not fit conventional genre boundaries. It has been called a “sui generis” work, and whether you like it or not is very much a matter of taste.
