About this deal

It has the turn structure of Terra Mystica, continually taking one action at a time until everyone has passed. In this economic strategy game for 1 to 4 players, you take on the role of one of many Scottish Clans in 19th-Century Scotland and work to improve Scotland through trade and export.

e. anything that is NOT a miner or a woodcutter) then they will be eligible to take advantage of the neighborhood bonus which I will discuss in the Market board section. Also, if you deploy all 4 units of one type onto the board you are allowed to draw 3 contracts from the stack and take one into your export box if it is available paying the rounds cost. The main way to score points in this game is to complete contracts so that has got to be your focus.Constructing things, variable player powers, market manipulation… these have all been used in other games before.

Comparing it to Terra Mystica, I prefer it as more streamlined, with the addition of a very well executed economy system. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. I am really not a fan of the round scoring tiles as they have little effect, much better is Terra Mystica where they have some development rewards too as well as the final scoring not being so much of a factor. Specialise in one of the advanced industries, that is, get all of the buildings of one type out, and you’ll get to take a new export contract from the stack. Due to the export bonus scoring for most fulfilled contracts, there is a certain incentive to fulfill many contracts. So interactive, but in subtle ways that mean it still holds up well at low player counts, and remains a fabulous puzzle even when you are out in a corner of the map on your own. Indeed, aside from those one or two points where the rules aren’t as generous as I felt they could be, the only place Clans really suffers is in comparison to Terra Mystica.

For instance, if I place any kind of unit next to my opponent’s Bakery, I will be entitled to purchase bread from the Market board at a discount since that’s what the Bakery produces. At the start of the game, there’s plenty of room for expansion, but this quickly becomes not the case as you start rubbing against the other players. The game doesn’t take up as much table space for a game of this weight as you would imagine and you get away with a smaller table than you would think. The game is tight, and you always want more money than you have so you need to make sure you have plenty when you start a round. My congratulations go to Juma and the rest of the team for delivering such an excellent game, even if there are a few quibbles to be made about the size of the box and the effort it takes to squeeze everything in. These punch boards contain the four map modules, nine starting resource tiles, twelve goods tiles (in case you run out of wooden pieces), nine scoring tiles, fifty export contracts, nine ports, seventy coins split over three denominations, nine clan tiles, four glory tiles, sixteen port markers, eight technology tiles, four export boxes, four player boards, one market board, one export board, and nine different clan boards, plus some special tiles that go with the various clans. Settlement scoring is one of the most complicated parts of the game and reading over that part of the rules a couple of times is worth doing, as is watching a video. We started on a basic game as suggested in the rule book - that meant leaving out some of the elements of the game, but still proved challenging enough. You build factories that turn your milk and grain harvest into delicious cheese, bread and, of course, whiskey, all of which you will export and trade for imported sugar cane, cotton and tabacco.

I’ll probably never bother with this variant because I’ve never been too concerned balance in games overall. The same can be said with the merchants and the market, this could have much more of an effect with the gameplay.During this period, Scotland made the transition from a predominantly agricultural economy to an industrialized one, heavily reliant on trade and export.
