With patience, it became easier to achieve browning to the edges without worrying about charring a slice of bread. The bagels had a nice, even browning, although they were slightly compressed by the cage inside the toaster. Then a quick turn in the toaster or zap in the microwave, and you have a hot breakfast with no mess and no fuss.
