About this deal

Lyndsie Manusos’s fiction has appeared in PANK, SmokeLong Quarterly, and other publications. She holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has worked in web production and content management. When she’s not nesting among her books and rough drafts, she’s chasing the baby while the dog watches in confused amusement. She lives with her family in a suburb of Indianapolis. Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic. And whether Caraval is real or not, Scarlett must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over or a dangerous domino effect of consequences will be set off, and her beloved sister will disappear forever. It has been harder to write since being published, for sure. It was just me and my computer before, so it was super easy to sit down and write. But I’ve learned a lot, so in some ways, I feel like it’s starting to get easier. After I sold Caraval, I tried to write the second book in the series, and I was suddenly aware of all the things I didn’t know. I was really good at being an unpublished writer, and I knew nothing about being an author. I feel like I spent the last five years figuring out what it’s like to be published and how that changes things, finding that balance. Has the pandemic affected your writing? How has it been for you to try to immerse yourself in a fantasy world when real life is so tumultuous?

Kissing and a girl partially undressed (and embarrassed) in front of a man. Talk of a girl's many suitors and rendezvous with men, but most of it is just talk. A kissing tent with participants inside. Some teasing innuendo as main characters pretend to be engaged. The Caraval trilogy put me in the mood for stories about high-stakes competitions, magic, circuses, and the overall art of performance. Here are some book recommendations along those lines that might help with the recovery process.

She imagined loving him would feel like falling in love with darkness, frightening and consuming yet utterly beautiful when the stars came out.Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over. Messages about bravery and choosing your own path. On the negative side, all the big romantic moments are paired with some kind of damsel-in-distress violence -- the female hero is injured and saved and wooed, then ignored until the next violence against her. Strong messages about taking responsibility for mistakes and choices. Love can be selfish and selfless, at-first-sight, passionate, unrequited, slow-building and steady. Perceptions of love and what you look for in love can change after heartbreak. Hope is a powerful thing. Some say it’s a different breed of magic altogether. Elusive, difficult to hold on to. But not much is needed. As you read the story, did you trust the right people to help Scarlett? Or trust too much? Is it better to be too trusting or too wary of others?
