About this deal

It is even more at ease with how honestly easy the entire thing was to set up. Two hours on a cool Autumn afternoon with set of body panel prys and some allen keys, some shop towels, and a small jug of isopropyl alcohol, and the cam was in. In fact, the only thing I’ve changed about the installation since it was done was that I built a battery-return ground instead of grounding out against the frame, so that I don’t micro-surge the control box with static electricity from my textile riding gear rubbing against the metal of the bike. A motorcycle dashcam isn’t going to be much good if its footage is shaky and grainy. Video quality is one of the most important considerations. You should be able to make out plenty of small details such as license plates, which could make all the difference if you need to present the footage as evidence.

The memory card never gets full. It uses “loop recording” and records small 3 minute video clips and once the entire memory card is full (usually hours and hours of video), it starts recording over the oldest video files. A dash-cam won’t protect you from an accident – only riding for yourself and considering scenarios will do that. It’s not about crawling along or riding in constant fear; it’s simply thinking ‘what if that driver hasn’t seen me’. BikeSafe is a brilliant way to get a grasp on this, and it’s one of the best value and most enjoyable training sessions I’ve had. The wireless acts as an access point, which you have to find in your phone’s wireless list and select, then enter a default passcode that you can find in the instruction manual. You can change that passcode if you want, but for the review, I felt it better to leave it as default in case I needed to factory reset the unit for any reason. Decide where to house your dashcam’s main unit. A good place is usually the storage compartment of your gas tank or passenger seat. For a camera of its size, I was impressed with the M1’s night vision capability. We’re not talking forward-looking infra-red camera capability like you might see in military applications. No, we’re talking about the M1’s ability to film in low light conditions and provide good color while doing it. Its night vision capability is perhaps this camera’s best attribute. I would go as far as to say that it has the best nighttime color retention of any small action camera I’ve ever used.

The global dash-cam market was valued at USD 2.8 billion in 2019, so it’s big business, with 36.1 million units sold in that year alone. In terms of image quality, weather and temperature resistance, connectivity, and dependability, the Thinkware M1 is unquestionably the superior choice. Sure, it costs a little more than the Blueskysea, but the dash cam's performance and long-term usability are guaranteed. The IP rating is both solid and water protection standard of International Electrotechnical Commission IP68 means M1 is protected from total dust ingress and high pressure water jets from any direction. Rains on a mountain road, dry dusty deserts, snowy hills, wild weather and rough road conditions are no an excuse for our true motorsports enthusiasts. The HaloCam motorcycle camera is a stand alone dash cam style setup that is wired into your motorcycle for power, or connected to an external battery bank that is wired into your motorcycle for charging. While the M1 does have an internal battery, it is small and only meant to keep the camera powered long enough when you turn off your bike to save the last video file. Having the HaloCam wired into your motorcycle will allow it to turn on and off when you start the ignition of your bike, unlike a helmet cam that you might forget to turn on or off. The Thinkware M1 was the first motorcycle dash-cam I reviewed, and while it’s a solid bit of kit, it is a bit bulky and pricey, especially considering it has no external GPS antenna, which can at times affect accuracy.Above we have reviewed the top dash cameras on the market today for motorcycles, showing you all their features as well as PROS and CONS. Below are a few more things we wanted to go over about buying a camera system for your bike. Why a motorcycle dash cam is better than a GoPro The remote GPS antenna gives the Innovv K3 a much better chance of displaying accurate speed and location data, and it’s certainly not bad. Speed seems fine (you don’t have to show it on your clips if you don’t want), and the accuracy is typically within a few metres. The whole reason to get a dash cam is to get excellent footage. Or what’s the use if you cannot identify the vehicle’s license plate or any important detail that can be used in court? Make sure that the dash cam has an excellent lens to shoot in High Definition. This change of mind return policy is in addition to, and does not affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law including any rights you may have in respect of faulty items. To return faulty items see our Returning Faulty Items policy. To make it convenient and straightforward, most of them also have a remote controller to save videos and take pictures while controlling other functions permanently.

This is not the type of experience we want you to have, and obviously, this is not something that Thinkware would allow you to go through. Thinkware has been an established brand in manufacturing car and motorcycle surveillance devices - and we’re confident that its decades of experience in engineering premium dash cams have already satisfied thousands of customers worldwide. The wider viewing angle of the Viofo when compared to some other cameras means some plates can be smaller in the frame so harder to read, but equally there’s more of the scene captured which could end up being vital. Files also old up fairly well to being enlarged. Keep in mind that if your goal is to read license plates at a distance, you will need to step up from 1080P to an Ultra High Definition 4K camera system that has 4x the resolution. A common complaint about industry-standard 1080p dashcams is that they don’t have the resolution to clearly record license plates. In reviewing video from both dashcams, I was never able to read a passing license plate. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any motorcycle (water-resistant) 4K dashcams advertised anywhere. A very intelligently designed, low profile, and easy to install system by ThinkWare, the M1 is quite possibly the most hassle-free, easy-to-use, and powerful camera system I’ve used in or on any road-legal vehicle. Wireless connectivity allows for near-instant review of incidents, an easy to find and press manual recording button lets me save things I want to save, and continuous recording means that, unlike with my car dashcam, I don’t even have to do anything except start my bike for the system to start recording. has a wired remote that can create a separate video from 10 seconds before the button press to 50 seconds after the button press. The video is stored in a separate folder so it will not be written over by the continuous loop recording.

So let’s get down to how the cameras performed and whether the claimed features are of significant benefit. Before mounting, turn on the ignition and ensure the device is working correctly. When looking at the Remote Module, the LED should be on.

Best Motorcycle Dash Cam in 2022

One of the nice things is that while the M1 is designed to be continuously recording in a loop, it does have the command toggle with two really big buttons with great tactile presses for use with gloves. One side activates the wireless connectivity of the dashcam to a smartphone running the ThinkWare app, allowing for aiming or re-aiming of the cameras, setting up how it records files at what resolution, turning electronic image stabilization on and off, if you want to capture sound, et al. The other button is a manual recording button, which will instantly save the previous 60 seconds of capture and record for another 30 seconds, very useful if you capture a fender bender in front of you, or want to review your riding on a specific turn or road. You can instantly view footage using the app on your phone, though it doesn’t connect automatically. You’re taken through the steps though, so press the button on the remote, then open the app and it will guide you to the settings, where you can switch your phone’s WiFi connection to the Thinkware module. Few dash cams have additional features provided, which is a major plus point, such as EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization), which is quite helpful to stabilize the footage and make it smooth. Gravity Sensor: G Sensors can detect crashes or collisions and help to permanently save the footage disallowing the auto-loop function to override them. Because the camera units are continuously exposed to the weather, the waterproofing capabilities of a motorcycle dashcam are one of the highest priorities. How waterproof a dashcam is can be identified by the second digit of its IP rating. The higher that number, the more waterproof the unit is.
