Determined that Jefferson will die with dignity, his godmother ("nannan"), Miss Emma, turns to Grant Wiggins, a black teacher at the local plantation school, and asks him to teach Jefferson to be a man.

But then an unpleasant fact comes to light – the woman was already dead before the landslide wrecked the house. An early novel by Ann Cleeves, somewhat amateurish and nowhere near as good as the Vera Stanhope and Shetland series. with the dead person’s picture and an image of the Buddha surrounded by candles, flowers and incense. A really good, fairly short, detective novel, nicely drawn characters and plot and a new detective to get to know.Having read all of the Shetland series and three of the Vera Stanhope series I was expecting another enjoyable read.
