Elaine Cunningham (September 2005). “New Olamn Bard College”. In Erik Mona ed. Dragon #335 ( Paizo Publishing, LLC), p. 26.

Viol– beauty and grace – the viol, viola, or gamba, is a mini-cello. If you have a miniature version of the viol, you can also use it as a violin, wowing the other adventures who may have never seen anything like it. Ed Greenwood, Julia Martin, Jeff Grubb (1993). Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting 2nd edition (revised), A Grand Tour of the Realms. ( TSR, Inc), p. 18. ISBN 1-5607-6617-4.The guide books make it clear that players aren’t limited with which instruments they may play. There are a few ways to acquire instruments in the game. Find a Music Store The yarting is essentially a Faerûnian guitar. I wonder if this is what the bard in the Player’s Handbook is carrying. In the lore, they come from Amn and Calimshan. The top of the drum produces a very warm and bassy sound that is not overwhelming and makes for perfect usage in intimate settings. It is both muted and deep, with the head being made from either artificial skin or a clear nylon head with a vinyl fabric on top. Many Uses Of The Tan Tan

It is also referred to as the Rebolo, which is said to be the smaller version, but it's still a reference to the same instrument. While the Tan Tan is often closer to 28 inches, the Rebolo averages around 12 inches in height. History Of The Tan Tan Instrument This drum is mostly used for small samba and pagode ensembles that are performing or parading in a very energetic environment to celebrate in Brazil. This drum has tons of other uses as well since it can be played similarly to the congo drum. Now, you don’t technically need an instrument to use Bard spells, but it can help you get into character. It may also be challenging to get the DM to allow you to use a few spells without one. Entertaining Your Party Lute– for everyone – the lute is a favorite of Bards everywhere. In fact, the Bard from my usual party was so inspired that he has a lute in real life and has become quite adept. I guess he is now proficient in real life.If you don’t know what a pan flute is, you might recognize them as panpipes. Another instrument associated with ancient Greece, this one named after the god Pan. Like flutes more generally, they can be found all over the world; the siku of the Andes is a particularly famous example. I’m not sure how popular they would have been in medieval Europe, but given the number of ancient Greek influences in the game, I don’t care much. If you want to play it safe, choose a lute or flute. But if you want to choose a wildcard instrument, I suggest the hurdy-gurdy or bagpipes. Find the instrument that suits your playstyle. What are Musical Instruments in D&D 5e? Bag Pipes– for those who want to march into battle – Bagpipes are an instrument that is also made of reeds that are attached to a reservoir bag. The sound is Celtic. Many drummers like to call this particular drum one of their favorites to play despite the insane amount of drums that exist in the world.

It usually comes in either a wood shell or a metal shell and is surprisingly lightweight despite how it looks because of its hollow bottom. Ed Greenwood, Sean K. Reynolds, Skip Williams, Rob Heinsoo (June 2001). Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting 3rd edition. ( Wizards of the Coast), p. 22. ISBN 0-7869-1836-5.Since longhorns were very sophisticated instruments, difficult to make, they could only be found in areas that held skilled artisans such as big cities and elven communities. [1]

The Tan Tan is more of a recent instrument compared to the other drums and instruments that I've showcased on this blog. It's primarily used in the genre of Pagode, which is a subgenre of the Afro-Brazilian genre Samba. If you’re musically inclined it can be really fun to actually sing a little spell or inspiration to your players. It can seem a little silly, but it’s good for setting the mood, especially if you’re a bard.

Tantan– for the sitting drummer – A tantan is a drum that is oblong and narrow compared to the classic drum. It is held on the knee and hit with the hand from the side. String instruments are far from basic, despite them being the most popular instrument in Dungeons and Dragons. They are extremely versatile and pleasing to listen to. This is my favorite category. Tim Beach (July 1990). “The New Rogues Gallery: Adagio Jones and The Goodwinds”. In Jean Rabe ed. Polyhedron #54 ( TSR, Inc.), p. 8. The lute is probably the most iconic Bard instrument. It easily fits into the fantasy theme and it has the versatility to play almost any song. It’s in essence a medieval guitar. That comparison will undoubtedly make music buffs cringe, but it’s the simplest analogy. The Shawm looks like a large wooden flute with the end flared out into a horn. It was primarily used in the Renaissance and was eventually replaced in popularity by the Oboe.
