About this deal

That’s why, when I left the corporate world (which I hated by the way), many people suggested I become a personal trainer. I remember thinking, even though personal training won’t pay as well, at least I would get higher job satisfaction and be able to wear my shorts to work’. It’s the same with calories, why cut your calories by an unsustainable 50 per cent, when you could cut them by 15 per cent and gradually lose weight without starving yourself and grabbing too many high calorie foods here and there. BUT tell me honestly what kind of a life is that? If your spending all living hours in the office, quite frankly life simply isn’t worth living. You could be a very successful business man but if you don’t leave the office then what are you going to of with all the money?

If posting about your passion brings you a bit of pleasure, then you’re winning already. Many don’t experience that in life. If you enjoy crafting wooden tables, then make them and find a marketplace to sell. Who doesn’t need a custom-made table in their house? Or even just do it for fun. Do yourself a favor and go do the stuff you love. I was so excited when I found out James was brining out a new book. Im a huge fan of his podcast and really enjoyed his first book Not a Diet Book. It came out at the right time for me personally and Not a Life a coach has absolutely nailed it’s timing too.The book is part self development, part stories about James’s own development and part him adding definitions to words or phrases. What you do is often a big factor in self-esteem, and this is hugely influenced by culture, but there’s often a stigma with certain professions (such as teaching, although hugely important for the development of future generations), while some may consider a doctor or banker to be at a more important professional level. What you achieve is also a big player in self-esteem; for some people, being the most qualified in the room is of the utmost importance in improving their self-esteem and therefore perceived self-worth.

Your BMR can be measured using an online calculator and is determined by someones weight, height and age – the three main components that will quantify the amount of calories you burn at rest (that’s the calories you burn without even moving). But in the fat loss world it just means getting bigger sized clothes or wearing darker colours, and often we only realise the repercussions when we have an obesity related health scare. But what I didn’t realise, was that the simple reason I wasn’t dropping the pounds was probably because of the ‘Two for Tuesday’s’ Dominos Pizza I was nailing every week and the fact that I was living off sausage rolls from Tesco, basically I was consuming too many calories.Sometimes being too busy is a valid excuse. There is absolutely no point telling people they have to train four times a week when realistically they can only train twice a week. The truth is James Smith has no real grasp on what he actually believes or at least he is uncomfortable trying to sell you his actual beliefs, this leads to a scattered and incoherent listen. Sometimes I think we just need a little reminder of things aren’t as we always perceive them and this book was good at that. However, if someone was to say to me ‘I can go to the gym five times a week at lunchtimes’ then I would say that in addition to the compound exercises, you can have a little fun and spend extra time training your glutes or your calves (if you’re a dude), but it isn’t totally necessary.

Even if you work on the seventh floor and your colleagues think your’e a nutter walking up seven flights of stairs, you can tell them that ‘actually if I do this three times a day everyday, I would have burnt an extra 50 calories – that’s 250 calories a week, 1000 calories a month and 12,000 calories a year’. That equates to four pounds of body fat, which is exactly what people want to lose before they fly to Ibiza. Only you can take the reins of your own life and choose to make a change, but with invaluable experience, a hunger for genuine happiness, and a drive to be the kind of coach he needed when his life was broken, James can give you the tools to do it. Who you know and your social circle can have big impacts on your perception of your self-worth. Some people can rate their status on who they know, who’s important and what influence they have. Some people think the reason for the growing selfie culture is that posting a picture with someone of influence or fame can raise their perceived status. I’ve yet to find a study on celebrity selfies, but people taking pictures of themselves to fulfil basic human needs like popularity and self-expression is a well-researched area, showing that it makes people feel better about themselves.

Separating fact from fad – Healthista editor Olivia Hartland-Robbins asks social media sensation James Smith for his no-nonsense fitness facts Let’s be honest who really wants to be counting their calories forever? Just do it for a few months – it can be a serious wake up call. Confidence isn’t just about what you say; it’s how you say it, your body language, your course of action and how you present or market your- self in every moment. It begins with self-belief and again, you can’t buy self-belief or top it up overnight – it comes from your identity and how you perceive yourself. Many people play into the idealism of ‘fake it till you make it’ but unfortunately that’s about as helpful as shouting ‘calo- rie deficit’ to an obese person or ‘cheer up’ to a depressed person. James is most definitely not a life coach. The irony of the title is not lost. The writing style is painful, hard to read and full of repetitive phrases. The content too, is just awful, embarrassing almost, it makes me wonder who pushed it to publication. Then you need to perceive someones activity level (how active someone is on a daily basis), to understand how many calories somebody would burn on top of that 70 per cent. This is determined when looking at someones Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (EAT) and Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) aka gym training and non-gym training.

Ignore Bod Pod, underwater submersion, body scanners and calipers (aka having your fat pinched). What’s wrong with taking a simple photograph? If you haven’t walked the walk then why are you talking the talk? Don’t trust them. Related Healthista Content: Whether we lose a job or don’t get a promotion, perform poorly in a workout or break up with a loved one, I don’t think we really appreciate the worst possible outcome. Going for a job that you’re not quite ‘experienced’ enough for, you may not get a second interview, but at least you went for it. You ended up in the same position before you applied and walked away a couple of hours poorer, but that little bit more experienced in the uncomfortable situation of being interviewed. These risks compound interest in your identity. Each is an opportunity to stretch the fabric of what you are comfortable with, an opportunity not everyone will take. An opportunity to inch ahead of everyone else. Confidence is a state of being clear headed either that a hypothesis or prediction is correct or that a chosen course of action is the best or most effective. Confidence comes from a Latin word 'fidere’ which means ‘to trust’; therefore, having self-confidence is having trust in one’s self. Now though you get, ‘who is going downstairs to meet the delivery guy then?’ I mean come on, all you have to do is walk to your front door and even that’s too much of an effort for some people. Some people interestingly think standing in a toilet cubicle with your hands over your head as power pose before a big event is going to increase your confidence tenfold, but I think that attitude does a huge disservice to the small battles won each day on the way to becoming the confident person who wins the job interview.” NEAT is any exercise you do that isn’t an active workout. That includes taking the stairs, not sitting on the tube and going for a walk at lunchtime rather than staying sat at your desk (hint hint). This type of exercise is what the majority of your day consists of and ultimately what burns the most calories.
