About this deal

Denim is easy to mix with other fabrics, including jersey and woven cotton. You can make fabulous combinations. Gather all your denim remnants, cut them into strips and sew them together to make a patchwork kimono or shirt. Or you can make a bag of braided strips to put the finishing touch to your outfit. Treat someone you care about to a classic denim shirt or a pair of comfy denim shorts. Denim is a classic - a true evergreen. When you hear the word denim, you likely see the iconic blue denim in your mind’s eye. At Selfmade®, formerly known as STOFF & STIL, we offer denim fabrics in four colours: white, dark, sand and grey. Make cute shorts and skirts to team with T-shirts and sweaters. You can make beautiful denim skirts for yourself and, if you want to experiment a little, you can add iron-on or sew-on patches or a zipper. For a smarter look, try making yourself a tunic. Make a shopper to carry your shopping and take with you when you are out and about. You can fold it up and store it inside another bag until you need to use it as a shopping bag. If you are not too keen on a uni-colour shopper, you can mix and match denim remnants to make beautiful patchwork or you can decorate your shopper with iron-on and sew-on patcheswith fine motifs or statements. You can also weave a bag of denim strips, and use webbing to make fine straps and handles. If you prefer to close your bag, you can use snap fasteners or zippers.

While drawing from denim's signature aesthetic, the collection also takes cues from streetwear, blending denim with graphic tees (¥12,100) and hoodies (might have to wait a few months for it to be cold enough to wear the latter!). Our tailors pay close attention to every detail, ensuring that each kimono is made with the utmost care and craftsmanship. The denim fabric density is expressed in ounces (oz). 1 oz is about 28 grammes. The ounce rating indicates the weight of the denim fabric. The lower the ounce rating, the less the fabric weighs. Lightweight denim is softer and more flexible than heavy duty denim. Made with 100% cotton and crafted by experienced traditional Japanese kimono manufacturers, our Denim Kimono is not only light and soft to the touch, but it also provides a level of comfort that is unmatched. In addition, our Denim Kimono is made without the use of synthetic fibers, ensuring a natural and soft feel.

Denim is the iconic jeans fabric. You can wear denim jeans on any occasion. High or low-waisted. With or without stretch. With wide or narrow trouser legs. Even with or without holes in the knees and elsewhere. There are almost endless variations of the popular denim jean but did you know that you can also wear denim in tons of other ways? Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk opens at the V&A later this month, with fashion currently the toast (or at least, the bread-and-butter) of many major museums. Last year’s Dior show at the V&A had 594,994 visitors, the largest in the museum’s history. The kimono exhibition will include box-office showpieces such as Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Star Wars robes, a dress designed by Alexander McQueen and worn by Björk on the cover of her album Homogenic and Oscar-winning costumes from Memoirs of a Geisha alongside rare 17th and 18th-century kimono. This is hardly the first time we’ve seen a major clothing brand collaborate with Studio Ghibli, but these jeans and t-shirts are notably more affordable than Loewe’s ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’ collection, where shirts cost upwards of ¥200,000. By blending the iconic imagery of 'Princess Mononoke' with their clothing, fans can now literally wear their favourite characters and scenes on their sleeve. At dusk in Kyoto, temples are crowded with Japanese teenagers who have rented colourful kimono by the day from local shops and are busy taking selfies. It is an indulgent, elegant tradition. The kimono’s cameo roles in western culture – eroticised on screen in Memoirs of a Geisha, or watered down into a sort of ornamental waitress uniform – are only fragments of its many lives on the streets of modern Japan. Many people, including native Japanese, find traditional kimonos difficult to wear in a casual setting. We understand this struggle and have created a kimono that combines the best of both worlds: the ease of wear and the authentic look of a traditional kimono. We recommend that you wash your denim fabric before starting your sewing project to allow for shrinkage and surplus dye. Denim fabric often shrinks in the wash. Denim is washable at 40°C.
