About this deal

There’s often talk of ‘burn in’ images on OLED screens, but much of this is anecdotal, and you’d probably need to be working the set very hard for this to become a problem. All OLED panels are manufactured by LG Display, so you have LG to thank even if you’ve got a Sony OLED in your home. You won’t find any gaming features on the UQ81 that would allow you to play next-gen titles. LG would have to provide an HDMI 2.1 interface and 120 hertz for that. But this is simply not part of the specifications. You will also have to do without three-dimensional surround sound and sometimes show some patience when navigating through webOS 22. Although there has also been a significant improvement in color balance, we would have wished for a bit more residual precision, especially for blue. The color fidelity tolerance has also shown considerable progress.

Based on the values we measured, we completely readjusted the LG UQ81. Even though we were not completely satisfied with the final result, we could still get some precision out of the panel. This reflects the series the TV belongs to. The higher the number, the more advanced (and expensive) the TV is. Acer Chromebook Spin 714 (2023) vs Acer Chromebook Spin 314 (2023): a battle of budget vs premium Chromebooks The gamma value shows a deviation of up to 0.14 and is almost beyond the prescribed value of 2.2 over the entire measuring range. The color representation is also quite noticeable as being imprecise. With our help, you’ll know exactly what you’re getting if you decide that your next television is going to be an LG.What that means is there's no clear winner here. Samsung TV and LG TV make excellent televisions. What's more, both brands also offer a range of TVs with different specs and prices, so there's often a TV to suit everyone, from the high-end through to the budget. If you decide an OLED isn’t for you, LG has plenty of options, including a QNED (Quantum NanoCell Emitting Diodes) lineup that makes use of a trio of panel technologies: Quantum Dot, Mini LED and NanoCell. The other entries in the 2023 lineup use basic LCD LED panels and are the most affordable 4K options LG offers. QNED: Next comes the panel type, which in this case is a Quantum NanoCell Emitting Diode (QNED) panel. Blooming is also present, but it is less noticeable due to the overall dark picture. As a result of the missing brightness, the panel does not deal well with reflections. Our studio light is of course an extreme example of this.

Those features may be exclusive to α9-powered sets, but the rest of the lineup isn’t short on improvements. Every OLED, QNED and UHD entry comes with “AI Blue Light Reduction” to deliver a more natural viewing experience, while the new webOS home screen makes new home screen for webOS groups content into easy-to-access categories to reduce the amount of time you spend scrolling. However, we are not really convinced by the TV. Although the color reproduction is also on a high level for gaming content, the moderate contrast and the moderate peak brightness are not enough for us to give a real recommendation for a well-rounded gaming experience. LG showcased its new TV range at CES in January, with the lineup comprising various OLED models, a Mini LED flagship, a few edge-lit Quantum Dot NanoCell alternatives and a handful of basic LCD LED models.

LG UR78: LG’s entry-level UHD TV in 2023, the UR78 runs web0S 23, is powered by the sixth-gen α5 AI Processor 4K and has a native refresh rate of 50Hz. It doesn’t have as robust an audio setup on board as the rest of the UR range, with AI Sound limited to virtual 5.1 up-mixing rather than 5.1.2 up-mixing. Image content in HDR is displayed on the screen, but it is really not brimming with brilliance. A luminance of 300 nits SI unit of luminance: 1 nit = 1 cd/m 2– The best way of measuring and comparing a TVs brightness at most is the end of the line. This performance level is simply not enough for real highlights. We've always been fans of LG's simple webOS smart TV platform. (Image credit: LG) Samsung TV vs LG TV: smart TV platform

Of course, you should not expect a real picture miracle in this price range. Nevertheless, the LG UQ81 can leave one or two positive impressions in terms of display quality. But what do you actually get when you buy this TV? Technically speaking, you would be placing a so-called IPS panel with a Direct LED base without local dimming, which means multi-zone illumination, in your room. LG UR91: Available in five sizes and powered by the sixth-gen α5 AI Processor 4K, the UR91 supports 4K Upscaling, HDR10 and HLG, AI Sound Pro and nine picture modes, but its 50Hz refresh rate means it’s not the best choice for next-gen gamers. C: The first letter of an OLED’s model number indicates the series to which the TV belongs. “Z” series OLEDs are the company’s most expensive, while the “A” series are entry-level options, though there’s no A series being released in the UK in 2023.

Find out how to make sense of LG’s bewildering TV naming methods

Generally, voices from the downward emitting speakers sound clear and can be understood sufficiently well. This puts the performance on the usual level for everyday use. True cinema atmosphere is – unsurprisingly – a foreign word for the 2.0 sound system with 20 watts of output. Despite the comparatively low price rating, you get a well-made 4K TV that delivers an amazingly great picture in terms of color reproduction and can also be used well for extended group evenings. However, the picture quality of this model is limited by its comparatively low contrast. Like just about every other TV manufacturer, LG has a penchant for labelling its televisions with long-winded model numbers comprised of what seem to be random numbers and letters. Samsung is currently the market leader, but which TV brand you choose is entirely up to you, your preferences and whether any of the differences we've highlighted above are dealbreakers for you. It's worth bearing in mind, however, that you'll want to compare like for like. A high-end set for Samsung, for example, will always beat a budget set from LG, and vice versa.
