About this deal

In our opinion the best beginners guide to mushrooms is Mushrooms: How to Identify and Gather Wild Mushrooms and Other Fungi by DK. As this is a collection of others' work and that work is primarily art, it's really not the easiest book to review. That being said, both the things the curator controls and the things they don't are well-done. The selections are great, and the diversity of art styles while still maintaining the theme of scientific botanical drawings were well-chosen. The write-ups before each section were brief yet informative. However, it should be noted that this book does use a lot of scientific terms and explanations which may be confusing to some people. Pros and Cons of Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds & Shape Our Futures by Merlin Sheldrake Pros Toshimitsu Fukiharu was born in Fukuoka, Japan, and graduated with a doctorate from the Department of Forest and Biomaterials Science of the Faculty of Agriculture at Kyoto University. He serves as senior researcher at the Chiba Open-air Museum Boso-no-Mura and is a part-time lecturer in the Faculty of Integrated Human Studies at Kyoto University. Toshimitsu Fukiharu specializes in the natural history of mushrooms and researches ammonia fungi, which uniquely grow in places where animal excrement and carcasses have decomposed. His published works include Kinoko no shita ni wa shitai ga nemuru?!―Kinshi ga orinasu fushigi na sekai (Underneath Mushrooms Are Carcasses?!―The Magical World Woven); Mitsukete tanoshimu kinoko no wandārando (Discover and Enjoy the Wonderland of Mushrooms); Shogakukan no zukan NEO: Shokubutsu (The Shogakukan NEO Picture Book of Plants); and Kangaeru kinoko: Maka fushigi wārudo (The Many Faces of the Mysterious Mushroom).

Can we really talk about mushrooms without touching on psilocybin? If you have a curiosity about this age-old and newly re-emerging topic then The Psilocybin Mushroom Bible: The Definitive Guide to Growing and Using Magic Mushrooms by Dr. K Mandrake and Virginia Haze is the book for you. I do agree that this would be a great book for any artist who wants to try their hand at botanical drawings. The details in this one are just stunning and you can also see the way they did shadows and showed various bits of the mushrooms.Best Field Guide: National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms by Gary A. Lincoff It includes information about mushroom season, habitat, edibility, alternative names, which are poisonous, different uses, and folklore. You learn all about sterilizing the equipment to produce your magic mushrooms, building containers to use during home cultivation, and all the safety measures you need to take to prevent contamination of the mushroom cultures. This guide is for those who want to consume magic mushrooms in a safe and enjoyable way. The book is written by Virginia Haza and Dr. K. Mandrake, Ph.D. Dr. Mandrake studied mycology and he uses his knowledge to detail the botany and history of psilocybin mushrooms. He imparts the knowledge he’s gathered to give you an idea of their popularity throughout human history. It’s a highly detailed and comprehensive bible that offers actionable insights for those looking to produce magic mushrooms. However, some customers have reported that it is best suited to beginners than more advanced mushroom growers.

The author explains each mushroom species in detail alongside a clear photograph. You get to discover the mushroom season, habitat, edibility, alternative names, and even some look-alike species. Dive in further and learn which mushrooms are edible and which are poisonous. You also uncover information about its different uses and any folklore relating to that specific mushroom. This book also contains a supplementary section on eating wild mushrooms. It includes cooking tips and some illustrations that identify the different parts of a mushroom. This is a well-rounded guide that makes it essential for those of you ready to move from reading into action. Pros and Cons of National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms by Gary A. Lincoff Pros That being said, aside from a coffee table art book, I don't believe this book offers much, which makes the ebook less worthwhile. I believe a collection of essays, either interspersed or added in another section, would help take this over the top. Essentially, for this to really feel like a good ebook, it needed more, in my opinion. It's a fascinating book of history with beautiful illustrations. I would not recommend it as a field guide, but as an interesting book full of fungi, it's wonderful. This would make a nice selection for public library acquisition, for gardeners, gardening groups, smallholders, and lovers of botanical art. Each chapter contains fascinating information on the artist and his drawing characteristics as well as history of genus names and other pertinent details. Amanita muscaria and Amanita caesarea, for example, are easily recognizable and observing different depictions is brilliant...though there are slight differences, the anatomy in each is correct and perfect. In this book, Merlin Sheldrake, a young biologist, gives you a different perspective. You get the fungal point of view. Sheldrake’s approach touches on everything from yeast to psychedelics. He touches on the fungi that link plants together in intricate networks and those that span over several miles underground. After reading this book, you might question human evolution and intelligence. Fungi are surprisingly precise and the author examines their roles as key players in most of life‘s processes. The goal is to change your mind, understand how fungi can heal your body, and explore deeper to prevent environmental disasters. When choosing the best books about mushrooms, first decide what you want to learn more about. There are educational books and those bursting with gorgeous mushroom art that you can add to your library.

Best Healing: Healing Mushrooms: A Practical and Culinary Guide to Using Mushrooms for Whole Body Health by Tero Isokauppila Best Psychedelic: The Psilocybin Mushroom Bible: The Definitive Guide to Growing and Using Magic Mushrooms by Dr. K Mandrake and Virginia Haze But the blurb specifies that EACH painting show the plant (thus the mushroom) in its natural habitat.. but um, where then? I mean for most we just see one to multiple mushrooms. Sometimes there is a dot of grass or a tree bark seen, but that is it.The chapters are selected from different historical books of mycology from the 18th - 20th centuries and from several disparate geographical areas in Asia, Europe, and the New World. The pictures are drawn from 11 collections and the style of the artist/naturalists and original media varied widely. I was fascinated by how varied the representations of the same species, Amanita muscaria for example, could be whilst still being perfectly recognizable. The reproduction text is still in the original languages (German, Japanese, Italian, French, etc). Wow! This compilation of works by various botanists/ mushroom enthusiasts is a truly impressive one, and I look forward to seeing more from this author/publisher in the future! It was so very enjoyable & I feel like I learned much! I definitely saw some mushrooms I have never seen (either in real life or in books) so that was a delight though I wanted to know where I could find these so I could see them for real.
