About this deal

I am planning on cuttings away the turf where the raised beds will go and using this turf in the bottom of the beds (with some organic-based compost on top). If there are larvae in the turf then will it affect my vegetables and should I treat the turf before I do this?

Pay particular attention to any areas of turf which appear stressed or thinning, particularly around the edges in shady areas, next to a fence or wall etc. If your lawn has been affected, you will notice that the root structure will be very weak so the grass may lift away easily from the lawn To aid the efficiency of the nematodes into the soil profile, apply with Aquazorb 45 Wetting Agent. Keep them in the fridge for application as a preventative when conditions are correct later on in the year. I would then lay a dark tarpaulin or dark plastic cover over an infected section of the lawn. If it was windy, I would peg it down.If you have any success with any of these controls, or have any other ideas or suggestions in keeping their numbers down, I would love to hear about it. Get in touch or ask a question. During the spring window the larvae will have grown to a stage where effective control of any type is significantly reduced. As a result it is important to note that the required application rate is higher for the spring window compared to the late summer into autumn window. Environmentally friendly and safe for children, pets and wildlife. No need to exclude children and pets from treated areas.

It is very important to irrigate immediately after application, water the grass well so the nematodes are washed below the thatch layer into the soil to reach the roots where the larvae will be feeding. So, if your lawn has been devastated this winter, don’t despair. Remember R.R.P … Reduce, Repair, Prevent. Follow these steps and you’ll have a great lawn this summer. A garlic spray is generally intended as a deterrent to prevent grub eating vegetative matter by giving them an unpleasant taste. September is too early as the grubs have probably not even hatched yet, let alone started feeding. I would leave it until much later on in the year. Ok that’s great. I have over netted my lawn and had eliminated over 1000 so far. ( plus prevented new ones entering my lawn) There are more males than females, so maybe my two years of nematodes worked with the females? Who knows? This product is a biological control which is fully compatible with an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programme. So now this weekend I have dug up what was left of the lawn (not much) it’s only about 5m x 4m. I plan start again – top soil and then turf. I would then be vigilant over the winter and hopefully the lawn should make it through without any further damage. The best time to apply the nematodes is between late August and the end of October when the grubs are young and weak. For effective treatment of large infestations, I’ve had to apply them two or three times for two years, as I’ve found that some usually persist. I am sorry that you feel the need to remove all signs of nature from your outside space. We should learn to live with nature not actively try to destroy it.

Damage From Larvae: The young crane fly larvae start to feed on the roots of grass, continuing throughout Winter and into Spring. This product is most effective when used between August-October. A secondary application in the spring, once soil temperatures exceed 12°C, is possible for serious infestations but efficacy will be reduced due to the stage in the lifecycle of both the pest and the nematode at this time. In late summer and early autumn, I would notice lots of daddy longlegs in my garden and I would try to stop them from mating by: First, I would find an area of the lawn that looks damaged, an unusual bare or brown patch, for example. Next, I would do a classic pull test; healthy grass will have strong roots and won’t be easy to pull up. I’ve found that diseased or damaged grass will have weak roots that give way easily. We reported this issue to the house-builders and initially I asked them that I wanted them to replace the lawn with new turf, but to be honest I am not sure whether this will help after reading this article & Q&A’s. The weather has now turned cold so I do not think the nematodes will be the right immediate treatment (and perhaps not successful anyway due to the sheer amount of crane flies we had over September). PLEASE NOTE: Turf, Wildflower Turf, Sedum Mats and bulk Bag products are delivered on a pallet and can only be delivered to the kerbside. I don’t recommend using household pesticides in the garden which are not labelled for use outside as they could do much more harm to other creatures and plants. Just continue the squishing, or maybe collect them up and feed them to the birds. They would love tasty grubs for breakfast!

To calculate your area measure the width and length of the area to be treated and multiply them by each other e.g. 5m x 20m = 100 sq.m Continue to keep the lawn moist for up to 2 weeks after application. Repeat these instructions for an introduction of a second nematode sachet application 7 days after the first application. Repeat applications may be required for severe applications. Full instructions are provided on delivery. Can I Store Nematodes?Suttons strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.
