The last thing Lou wants is to move to a tiny Cotswolds village. She certainly doesn’t intend to work for curmudgeonly eighty-year-old Edgar Allsopp. But Edgar is about to make her the kind of promise nobody could ignore. In return, she secretly vows to help him fall in love with life again. The storyline moves along at the perfect pace, building up not only Edgar and Lou’s relationship, but also Lou’s relationship with childhood friend, Remy. Remy was lovely and I soon realised why Lou had fell for his charms so easily the first-time round – I just hoped she trod more carefully this time! Most of the characters were likeable and I was caught up with their storylines. I have to admit to not really liking Della, but I suppose that was the whole point! My favourite had to be our four-legged friend, Captain Oates and I thought the relationship between him and Edgar was just absolutely delightful! Ook wil ik nog even complimenten maken voor de paar medische scènes die in dit boek zitten. Deze zijn realistisch en geloofwaardig en als professional in het vakgebied kan ik zeggen dat dat vaak anders is. Bovendien zijn het heel voorstelbare personages; van sprankelende Lou, via Ed Sheeran-Sammy, mopperkont Edgar met zijn kleine hartje (hij deed me denken aan een oudere versie van mr. Darcy), kieskeurige chihuahua Captain Oates, de knappe Remy naar de gladjakker Tom, zijn flapuit zus Fia en vergankelijke terugkijkend op vervlogen tijden ex-beroemdheid Della.

We had a great chat while she was watering her hanging baskets outside the shop.’This really was a captivating read that held my attention the whole way through and there were predictable and unpredictable parts in equal measure which just made the book such a joy to read. I was championing the outcome of this book and I was so pleased that the author chose to end the book the way she did, I do love a dose of Karma! Meanwhile Sammy’s brother Remy has begun to catch Lou’s eye. Handsome and charming, with women falling at his feet, Lou is determined that she will not become another notch on his bedpost. Resisting temptation is not easy!

Lou is een personage om wie je meteen gaat geven: ze heeft een groot hart, tomeloze energie en een positieve instelling, ze is zorgzaam en altijd op zoek naar manieren om andere mensen gelukkig te maken, al laat ze daardoor ook wel eens over zich heen lopen en is ze redelijk naïef, ondanks alles wat ze heeft meegemaakt. Haar omgang met de knorrige en botte maar eenzame Edgar maakt je vrolijk, ze zorgt ervoor dat hij weer onderdeel van de gemeenschap wordt en bezorgt hem echte blijdschap door een nieuwe vriend op zijn pad te brengen: de lastige hond Captain Oates, die voor grappige en ontroerende momenten zorgt en de held van het verhaal wordt. He was gesturing at the majestic Georgian property constructed from custard-coloured Cotswold stone and overlooking the small town like a Roman emperor surveying his subjects. It was solid and square, with symmetrical rows of six-paned sash windows on three levels, a silver-grey slate roof, wisteria climbing up the walls and impressive stone pillars flanking the front door. The characters are all so well developed and they are not all perfect either they each have their flaws, may that be with our grumpy old Edgar who many find rude or the lovable Lou who although hardworking and caring only took Edgar up on his offer for her own gain but she was not the only one. I had such conflicted thoughts and emotions throughout this storyline, how I could love a character so much but not be onboard with their actions. Lou is needing to start over, her husband (although not a very nice one) has died, she has just lost her job and been turfed out of her home. The story is beautifully written, with warmth and wit. I read the book in a day as I couldn't get enough of it.Hmph. Wait a minute.’ He held out the pen as Lou hoisted her bag over her shoulder. ‘Write down your number before you go.’ I did have someone. She left, same as all the rest of them.’ He pointed at an area beneath a chair. ‘You missed a bit.’
