Medium finish of buttery toffee, fruit, graham and tootsie rolls that fades to an alkaline minerality. The Omar range – bourbon- and sherry-cask single malts – are well-balanced and tasty whiskies, but it’s the single casks where the distillery really shines. Hopefully, this nod from Jim will lead to more of them making their way to the UK. The Winners 2020 JM: Whisky-related tourism has been a rapidly growing segment of the Scotch whisky industry. The Glen Grant has a new visitor center, and the distillery is located in an exceptional botanical garden that was created by Major Grant almost a century ago. What’s The Glen Grant doing to encourage whisky tourism, and how do you expect it to impact the brand?

The long finish is mouth-drying with lemon pepper, walnut skins and toasted oak. Really stunning single malt in the purest Speyside style. Jim Murray is a huge fan, awarding it Single Malt of the Year (Multiple Casks) and for once I kind of agree with him. Glen Grant was founded in 1840, by brothers John and James Grant, two former illegal distillers and smugglers who decided to take out a license. With the sea and port of Garmouth nearby, the River Spey at its feet and barley-growing plains nearby, all the basic ingredients of malt whisky were close at hand. This time the distillery was legal. [4] Opens with an inviting aroma, with the first sip bringing a lot of character. Caramel notes are touched by sweet vanilla and caramel corn, then underwritten by slightly smoky flavors and oak tannins. It maintains a smooth evenness between the four grains interacting with the charred oak barrel. Overall, a nice balance, and unique. The taste of the Glen Grant 18 Years is the best part of the whisky and if the nose and palate delivered at that same level it’d be ringing in around a B+ for me. The overarching character of the whisky is light, fruity and comes across the senses crisply, cleanly and feels like a whisky that doesn’t like to get its hands dirty – but it should. It’s definitely an improvement over the 12-year-old, but it needs something to help balance out the sweetness a bit. DM: Our signature flavor profile – singularly aromatic with delicately fruity floral and nutty notes – is delivered in part by maturation in the best bourbon barrels, and we will continue to stay true to who we are. That said, The Glen Grant does mature beautifully in Sherry and other types of casks, which is why we use them for select releases. Also, many of our older whiskies were aged in ex-Sherry barrels, so it’s an influence we often see in our older releases. JM: The Glen Grant has not released a lot of cask-finished expressions. There was a Port cask finished from The Glen Grant a few years ago that was a distillery exclusive. There are also some expressions from the 1980s, like the Director’s Reserve, that, I believe, showed some Sherry influence. Are there other cask-finished expressions from The Glen Grant? Are you planning more cask-finished whiskies in the future? Palate: Mint and menthol appear from nowhere, along with a big, rich spiciness, and suddenly you realise the complexity you’re dealing with: cinnamon and clove, apple, mango, biscuit, oats, white pepper, but all well defined and distinct. Nothing could match the astonishing beauty of its surprisingly delicate weight and complexity combined. It was though time stood still in the tasting room; I just knew…’

The 21 YO is the first Sherry-influenced expression added to the core range in recent years. Rumor has it that there is a lot of Sherry matured whisky in the bottling queue at The Glen Grant. What Sherry, either cask finished or matured, expressions can we expect from The Glen Grant in the future?Much of our older inventory has seen further maturing in ex-Sherry casks, so it’s an influence we’ve seen in special releases in the past, and you’ll continue to see it in older expressions. With that in mind, we continue to experiment with casks that may enhance the signature flavor profile from The Glen Grant. Watch this space for more news in the future. Due to the sherry influence, I can’t see it as a highball, but I could see it as a session whisky. Score: 5/10Glen Grant 1938 GM For celebrate H. M. Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother's 80th Birthday, 4th August 1980 More dynamic than the aroma, the palate delivers notes of malt, complex fruit, honey, Nilla Wafers, almonds and light bits of spice, cocoa and buttery toffee. It still comes across a bit light, but it’s a vast improvement over the GG12. Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. There are also caramel and some slight marzipan notes accompanied by custard-like notes of creamy vanilla. The winners list is much more than just the top four. The bible covers whisky from across the world and Jim sometimes uncovers a hidden gem, as well as reaffirming his (and, in a lot of cases, our) favourites.

Glen Grant distillery was founded in 1840 in Rothes, Speyside, and produces single malt Scotch whisky. He taught me that you have to take care of the people first because, without your team, you have nothing. I hope to give my successor this advice because it is at the heart of what makes The Glen Grant what it is today. On that note, I’ve never heard Glen Grant be the talk of the town until their 18 year old was named by Jim Murray as one of his top 3 whiskeys a few years ago. Think about it. Underdog brands like Glendronach, Kilkerran and Arran never really won any of the heavily publicized awards, yet they are more appreciated now. One of the better 12 year old single malts I’ve tried in recent memory. Oddly, the price difference between this and the Arboralis is not that huge. Pricier NAS whisky justified due to ex-sherry casks, maybe?
