About this deal

This one will annoy you if you’re not very skilled at attaching wires. The cable is designed for “no-tool” installation. It all comes from cable TV using coax cables. The TV suppliers realised that they could use the same cables to supply internet too and it had the ability to reach high speeds, much higher than cheap, thin copper cables used by phone companies. They created a specialised protocol called DOCSIS to be able to handle the duplex traffic required (previously only needing one way traffic to pipe TV channels into your home). Looking for a low-cost coaxial cable that can be used with various devices and is also lengthy and slim? You’ll adore this one from The Cimple Co. I see, thanks for the explanation. So do you think coax will become the norm for running cabling from the cabinet to the house? I guess its still a lot cheaper than fibre. If you wanted Virgin Media I take it they would need to run a coax cable from a point in the street to your home? Although they are more expensive, slimmer cables that operate just as well are available. Customizable or mass-produced?

Dante, your diagram is really helpful in helping me visualise the install. I've made a couple of changes to illustrate my question, see attached. Is this set up possible? Not quite. G.Fast is the next step in ADSL. Yes it has it's limitations but it's still impressive speed over a single copper pair. The exterior is also UV and water resistant. This quad shielding is what makes this so appealing to the masses. This type of double insulated cable will endure a long period. This features strong aluminum braiding with alu-mylar foil for a better connection. You can also readilly buy the compression F connectors and a crimping tool needed to connect them. Crimped F connectors are a common type of connection and not exclusive to Virgin Media. Get a nice installer and he may do this for you using your cable and not theirs. You don't need one of the expensive tools unless you are doing this all day long for a living. Once at the house, the Virgin Media technician will run the cables wherever you want, and to any rooms you specify. Compatible with most jobs, including cable internet, dish TV, satellite TV connections, and even DIRECTTV.

VM's cable is no better than that which I suggested be used. The issue is that not everyone will be using cable that is of the same quality as I advised. it all sounds like rubbish - its certainly true that they wont use customer installed coax but from there it does not sound right Are you familiar with rebalancing power levels in the cabinet, for example? Not saying you'll need to do so, but it's often a possibility when you change lengths of co-ax runs. You can watch live and on demand TV from the following players... BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4, My5, UKTV Play, STV and Horror Bites/CBS Catchup.

Given, in a ideal world you'd want the installer to measure the signal levels while using the cable you intend to operate the equipment with and adjust those levels accordingly, but given the cable lengths in question, the signal levels are not that likely to be outside the acceptable range even if using different cables. Because coax cables are such a crucial aspect of your internet and TV connection, you must be cautious while purchasing for them.

I've had VM installers use the cable I've installed without even noticing that it isn't the cable that Virgin Media use. I've also had them knowingly use my cable after asking them if they'd mind not using their own.
