Press escape key to return to main menu Portraits such as the one of Miles Brathwaite II and the National Portrait Gallery’s portrait of John Hothersall Pinder are portals into understanding hidden histories. However, simply displaying these works can re-inscribe inequalities. Access to such images needs to go hand in hand with increased contextualisation and full historical insight. Without this we risk contributing to the reproduction and magnification of colonial hierarchies. Agostino Brunias, The Barbados Mulatto Girl (1779). Braithwaite has reworked his scene with his grandmother’s patchwork quilt and a Caribbean map. Academic Calendar Navigation link in category Student Services. Press escape key to return to main menu

In my musical work, as a performer and opera singer, I’ve always been attracted to stories that haven’t been told, and voices that have been silenced. I created a musical project based on the “Entartete Musik” exhibition that the Nazi party held in Germany in 1938, of music that was banned in Germany since 1933. The exhibition included music interspersed with historical texts, such as snippets of the exhibition brochure, text, and other elements of propaganda. John Thomas Smith, Joseph Johnson (1815). Braithwaite reworked the scene with cardboard, a mop, and an Afro print flag. Courtesy of Peter Braithwaite. I’d like to think that the project feels like an accessible route into discovering marginalised art, especially because it combines humour with history. The goal is always to help people to access a different, difficult history that maybe they would not have necessarily accessed before. Addo’s family set an excellent example to the rest of the congregation, by their attention and good behaviour.I would highly recommend this for everyone from those well-versed in art history to those who simply enjoy art and creativity in general. I think this would be a great book to include in either an art history course or, even better, an interdisciplinary course where some of the historic people and/or periods can be examined through a new lens. It felt like a home from home being in the music department. Ira Aldridge after James Northcote, circa 1826 Private Collection; on loan to the National Portrait Gallery, London My experience of the cultural scene in Newcastle really shaped who I am today as an artist and performer. When I was a student, the Baltic and Sage had only recently opened. It was really exciting to have a contemporary art venue as big as that, and as diverse, on my doorstep. And I was fortunate enough to perform at Sage Gateshead as part of the University choir (a performance which made me sure that singing was what I wanted to do as a career!)Pinder’s name surfaced a third time in my research as Margaret and Addo named one of their sons after him - Aaron Pinder Brathwaite, who went on to become a school teacher.
