Each week families are gifted a free book linking with the session, so by the end of the programme families will have built a mini library in their home. Speech and Language Therapists are employed on the project too, offering support and advice for practitioners and families taking part. The story books feature a young boy, his home, his pets and his relationship with others. The full-colour illustrations are clear, simple and child-friendly. The children’s story books for individual reading are in A5 portrait format.
Words First is a stand-alone programme specifically designed to teach children to read and write high frequency words.

Adapted from National Literacy Trust’s Early Words Together programme, First Words Together supports babies and toddlers who may need early help with speech, language and communication before the age of two.
The 48 words are divided into four groups of twelve. After each group of twelve has been learned securely, the children are rewarded by reading for themselves a simple story which contains only the words they have been taught. So story one is based on just 12 different words, story two on 24 words and so on. There are five stories in all - the last story revises all 48 words. The scheme takes as its starting point the first 45 high frequency words originally identified by the National Literacy Strategy, which are directed at Reception Year Children. Words First takes a carefully structured approach to learning to read and write, by linking word recognition and comprehension skills in a series of graded steps. Each group of twelve words is further divided into three sub-groups of four - so the children will learn up to four words at a time. Most of the words are also linked to a picture. The aim is to teach the High Frequency Words both individually and within a reading context, so that the children realise from the very beginning that words join together to convey meaning. The programme also builds knowledge and confidence in early years practitioners and professionals. Practitioners are trained to deliver weekly sessions that include evidence-based, fun activities based around five top tips, to build the foundations of communication that parents can easily repeat in the home. This then encourages positive change to a child’s home learning environment. First Words Together is being externally evaluated by CREC. It is important to collect survey data from both practitioners and parents to pass on to CREC and we ask for your timely support with this.
Babies communicate long before they start to talk, through gestures, showing and giving objects, pointing and vocalising. Sharing books and interacting through books from when babies are very young supports communication and language development. This universal programme builds parents’ and carers’ awareness and confidence in supporting early communication leading up to babies’ first words.

At the end of each session, practitioners will provide parents with take-away sheets with key messages for supporting their child’s communication development and simple activities to try at home. These are available to photocopy in your First Words Together toolkit, but we will be adding more take-away sheets here with QR codes linked to voiceovers in community languages. Very simple comprehension sheets are provided from the first story onwards to ensure that reading for meaning is emphasised at the earliest opportunity. As you may already know, we aren’t like other online book stores. For starters, we don’t believe that books should only be read once, or have a single owner. Literature should endure and be continually recycled, which is why we help millions of used books find new homes every year. As part of the project, you may want to share photos of families taking part in the sessions. Please help parents to complete the photo permissions form if you would like to send us photos of staff, parents and children in your setting. It also develops the skills and confidence of parents and carers, enabling them to consistently support their child’s early speech, language and communication. The sessions, alongside an associated behaviour change campaign are currently running across the West Midlands and North East of England, as well as in Rochdale and Cornwall.
