Ella Minnow Pea Summary and Study Guide | SuperSummary

What parallels do you see between the Council’s strictures on language and the strictures imposed by Oulipo? There is also the possibility that the very density of the novel’s linguistic surface is meant to tease readers into looking for codes where none exist. Cummels, it is the Council’s earnest conviction that there is no other Supreme Being but Almighty Nollop. The Councilmen of the island deem the fallen tile a sign from Nollop himself, a sign that the letter shouldn’t be used by the inhabitants any longer. The more letters are eliminated from the islanders’–and the novel’s–discourse, the greater the risk of incoherence.Maybe the most moving piece here is "On The Rainy River," about a draftee's ambivalence about going, and how he decided to go: "I would go to war—I would kill and maybe die—because I was embarrassed not to. Cleverness is the hook with this little fable—those delighting in wordplay will be duly rewarded by seeing language stretched to its limits. A series of notes and letters from citizens of this highly literate nation, particularly Ella and Tassie, two young cousins who are members of the Minnow Pea family, records the actions of the island’s ruling council, which decides that the fallen letters (and the words that contain them) are meant to be removed from Nollop’s vocabulary. Death from Above: When the tile with X falls, it hits a man directly on the head, injuring him severely.

Ella Minnow Pea - Wikipedia

Professor Mannheim’s daughter, who becomes an orphan following his death and who stays with Ella for a time because there are no other relatives for her to live with on Nollop. Tom also goes into hiding following Mannheim’s death, leaving Enterprise Thirty-two entirely to Ella. Do they stay in their homes, where they were born and raised, despite the absurdity of the laws and the threat to their lives? Now deceased, the islanders have erected a monument to honor their hero, but one day a tile with the letter “z” falls from the statue.

On an island where the residents pride themselves on their love of language, this is seen as a tragedy. Ella decides to cautiously obey the decrees for the time being, but Tassie is outraged in Ella’s response, pointing out that already books are being banned from the library. They make this an annoyingly arty book, hiding more than not behind Hemingwayesque time-signatures and puerile repetitions about war (and memory and everything else, for that matter) being hell and heaven both.

In addition to coining words, Mark Dunn invents a number of phrases intended to serve as euphemisms or to express an idea without the use of a banned letter. She, along with her daughter and Nate Warren, travels to the States to escape her daughter's death sentence. The Council passes a law against uttering words containing the letter; punishment for violating their strictures can lead to banishment and even death. Uncompromising in their enforcement of Nollop's "divine will", they offer only one hope to the frustrated islanders: to disprove Nollop's omniscience by finding a pangram of 32 letters (in contrast to Nollop's 35).

Ella Minnow Pea - Mark Dunn - Complete Review Ella Minnow Pea - Mark Dunn - Complete Review

Ella Minnow Pea is an epistolary novel, unfolding through the correspondence among Ella, her cousin Tassie Purcy, and various other characters, along with communiqués from Nollop’s governing High Island Council. It's lighter than those high-school standards 1984 or Brave New World, but even when only LMNOP remain, it's touched by sweetness.

Ella Minnow Pea is the first political satire of the 21st century, and, appropriately, it's a kinder, gentler satire. On the basis of your reading, do you think these works are notable chiefly for their gamesmanship or do they achieve ends beyond the reach of more conventional fictions?
