About this deal

Daily Mail This is my book of the year so far . . . Woollvin is a striking new talent with strong retro style illustrations and a simple, witty text. There was no commission as such, the book began life as a project in the second year of my illustration degree. A very broad brief was handed to us, simply to make a book of any kind. I decided to use this opportunity to experiment with illustrating for children, and with narrative illustration. This simple book will appeal to the squirmiest young children, but it might be a bit too gruesome for the more sensitive child. The action takes place off-screen, but you see Red holding an axe, and then you see Red wearing the wolf's skin, and granny waving good-bye from her front door, so it's pretty clear that Red killed the wolf with an axe and released her grandmother from the wolf's stomach. Some kids will LOVE that twist. Bethan Woollvin's version [of Little Red Riding Hood] has a far darker ending - and I loved it. The talented illustrator and writer has taken a childhood niggle as her premise for this bold feminist version of the story: would our caped heroine really have been taken in by a wolf in a bad grandma disguise? . . . I won't spoil the ending but let's just say Little Red wraps it up nicely (and warmly) and it has my three year old son thrilled at every read, begging for more. What would have happened if Little Red Riding Hood would have felt strong and confident enough to defy the wolf by herself instead of waiting for the woodcutter's help? Eager to discover whether the prince rescues the slumbering princess, Ella Bella waits for the other children to leave and then opens Madame Rosa’s enchanted musical box.

What left me wanting more: This book is a bit scary and should not be read to sensitive children. The wolf is shown eating the grandmother, and he is definitely a scary presence throughout. Little Red is also shown wearing the wolf's pelt at the end, which may also be challenging for sensitive animal lovers. This is definitely a dark story, and it would be better for children who enjoy a touch of the dark in their fairytales. Little Red: A Rebel Fairytale eBook : Woollvin, Bethan

Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical Moments Little Red is a children’s picture book, adapted from the classic Little Red Riding Hood tale with my own text and illustrations. Bethan Woollvin graduated from the Cambridge School of Art with a First Class Degree in Illustration in 2015, and currently lives and works in Brighton as a freelance illustrator. Inspired by vintage illustration and printmaking, Bethan uses bold colours and quirky characters to tell stories with her illustrations.Advice I would give to an aspiring illustrator would be to not judge your own work too early, it could be something beautiful! I try to nurture an idea as much as I can before I show others. Receiving critiques from your peers is vital in the creative process, but if you or others judge an idea before it has bloomed you might start to doubt something that could have been amazing. If you persevere, it might pay off! Hello Yellow - 80 Books to Help Children Nurture Good Mental Health and Support With Anxiety and Wellbeing - Little Red is an important retelling of the traditional tale Little Red Riding Hood, encouraging children to find joy in how the same classic story can be told in different, innovative ways. Lynn Roberts-Maloney has retold many traditional tales in novel ways, including Cinderella, an Art Deco Fairy Tale and Rapunzel, a Groovy 1970s Fairy Tale. David Roberts – her brother – has illustrated many of her texts and is a significant, award-winning illustrator also known for illustrating the Questioneers series by Andrea Beaty. Little Red is bursting with historical 18th-Century English detail and has a strong female protagonist.
