About this deal

In many cases, one leg of the breeches was coloured differently from the other leg to give it a more comical look. Another distinctive feature of a medieval jester’s attire was a special sceptre known as the bauble. Court jesters were entertainers who served and entertained royalty, but they were also at the mercy of their masters and subject to danger. Pietro is a smug villager, meaning he will come off as a polite gentleman, though also arrogant and conceited. If the player is female, he will occasionally flirt with them. He wakes up at 8:30 AM. Towards the later medieval period, dressing elaborately became a part of the role a jester had to play in entertaining. This resulted in the use of gaudier clothes, often using mismatched colour schemes and different comical embellishments added to the clothes. Although we often find ourselves learning about male court jesters, there have been a few female jesters throughout history, some of whom are rarely known. Specifically, female court jesters, including Matilda Makejoy, who performed for the medieval courts of Kings Edward I and II, and jester Lucretia the Tumbler, who was an entertaining member of Queen Mary I's Tudor court. Jane Foole was another iconic "jestress" who entertained Queen Catherine for many years.

Being a court jester often involved being a messenger and delivering messages that could anger enemies, putting the jester's life at risk.Dangerous job: Jesters worked as messengers between locals and royals, often being brutalized for bad news. The clothing of the medieval jesters evolved significantly from the early medieval period to the late medieval period. In the early medieval period, the dressing of jesters was simpler and they relied more on elaborate skills such as singing, music, magic and storytelling to earn their place in the court. From head to toe, a medieval jester looked a part of his job of entertaining. The head of a medieval jester was typically shaved. During the early medieval period, a jester would wear a hat with the ears of an ass on top of the shaved head. That said, female jesters were treated a bit more humanely than men, and we're often harmed or killed. They were for entertainment only, being more like 'in-house' performers for royalty. Men, however, often also took on roles of messengers, bringing news from towns or other areas into the castles they worked in. In many ways, both of these roles could be compared to that of indentured servants at the time, minus the cooking and cleaning and child watching. Medieval jesters typically wore a coat which was made from motley colours, usually bright and patterned irregularly. Under this coat, the jester would typically wear tight breeches which were of a similarly bright colour.

Towards the later medieval period, jesters began wearing a monk’s cowl on their head which fell over the shoulders and gave them a comical look. Court jesters have been popularized in both literature and film, many times with the reputation of being a joker or - more accurately - an entertaining, as it was once their job to 'jest' the audience. In regard to many who question whether or not these dancing jesters actually existed throughout the course of history, they did. However, their lives were not always as fulfilled and jaunty as they might appear in similar pop culture references.Female court jesters did exist, although they were usually treated more humanely and seen as entertainment rather than messengers like their male counterparts. Historic England had many roles in the kingdom, with jesters playing an integral role in the formation of arts and entertainment. Some have even claimed because of court jesters, we have stand-up comics today. Oh, how history surprises us!

By the late medieval period, a standard type of hat, called the “Fool’s hat” had become popular among court jesters.
