About this deal

You can change the cleaning mode on the iO5 before turning the brush on. You can’t do this on the iO4. Your brushing time and technique have a far bigger impact on the cleaning results than the mode you use. Jon bushes teeth with iO3 that brushes as well as any other iO model Various price points to suit different budgets All iO models have a reminder system built into the app and the brush handle. How this reminder is displayed differs. All modes are designed to be used for 2 minutes. The only exception is tongue clean which is set for 30 seconds. It’s possible to set the default colour of the indicator in the smartphone app – handy, if you have multiple iO brushes in the bathroom – while the pressure sensor makes its transition between blue, green and red, depending on whether you’re brushing too softly, brushing too firmly, or getting the pressure just right.

The iO5 comes with a travel case and a refill holder that holds and protects 2 brush heads. The iO4 does not come with this. The overall size is still significantly smaller than most sonic toothbrush heads. It’s not as quiet as many other brushes, but far less noisy than non-iO models Instead, the protuberance on the top of the stand will fit into the recess on the base of the iO5’s handle and will recharge the brush in up to 16 hours. The Series 9 comes with a power2go charging case that allows the iO to be charged inside whereas the Series 8 comes with a standard travel case. I often describe Oral-B brushes as providing an intense and almost aggressive clean. It’s the best way I can describe the sensation of the round brush head passing over the teeth and gums. It can be quite satisfying, your teeth instantly feel cleaner, but I know it’s not a sensation everyone likes. Particularly if you are used to the softer experience given by sonic toothbrushes from the likes of Philips Sonicare or Colgate.

The table below shows which iO model has which mode. Should you want to learn more about each, do read our Oral-B cleaning modes explained article. Cleaning Modes Simply put, you don’t need so many. Daily Clean is more than sufficient for most. But, the Sensitive mode can be a nice extra to have for those days the teeth and gums might feel a little more tender.

Oral-B iO Series 4 review: Oral-B’s best tech on a budget

The Series 5 has 5 cleaning modes (daily clean, sensitive, super sensitive, intense & whitening) compared to the 4 of the Series 4 (daily clean, sensitive, super sensitive & whitening). The extra mode the iO5 has is intense. Models that connect via Bluetooth to an app will report the active mode within the on-screen timer. The plug on the end of the cable is a 2 pin power adapter (suitable for UK bathrooms). It will recharge the battery in up to 16 hours.

A single Ultimate Clean head is included with the iO4. Alongside the Gentle Care head, it is one of our preferred options from the 4 different styles of iO brush heads available. The iO10’s pacer is often set to 20 second (sextant) intervals compared to the 30 second (quadrant) intervals of the iO9. Many brands of toothbrushes now last 3-4 weeks on a single charge, so the Series 4 really falls a bit short. Particularly when you consider the size of the handle compared to the likes of SURI, which is much slimmer. But, like the iO9 and 10, the battery performance is a little inconsistent. At times, I’ve gotten only 14 days from the battery. I can’t explain why. iO Series brushes offer a different brushing sensation to other Oral-B models and truthfully, it is much more pleasant.

Activated as soon as you power the brush on at 30 second intervals, the brush motor momentarily pauses. The sound and brushing sensation change. This is your notification to move to the next section of your mouth. Come 2 minutes, the alert is 3 momentary pauses. Hear this and you’ve brushed for the recommended minimum time. Thanks for the comment and I am so pleased to read that the smart toothbrush that is the Oral-B iO6 is working for you. This is fantastic. As an oscillating and rotating brush, it does still feel different in use to a sonic toothbrush, it doesn’t feel as light and gentle as they often do. The iO5 is water resistant so can be rinsed under a tap The brush head is bigger than what you might be used to

You will also learn how long each secontion needs to be brushed, in fact ask your dentist next time and they will show you how to hold it and what to do. The Series 8 has 6 cleaning modes (daily clean, sensitive, super sensitive, intense, whiten & gum care) compared to the 7 of the Series 9 (daily clean, sensitive, intense, whiten, gum care & tongue clean). The extra mode the iO9 has is tongue clean. But, equally, good toothbrushing habits does require a small amount of pressure to be applied. It’s a balance that can take some getting used to. With the iO4, striking this balance is made much easier as the brush tells you when you are doing it right and wrong. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the icons are not all that logical with multiple icons lit for specific modes.

The most affordable iO-series toothbrush is brilliant at cleaning and offers excellent value, too

The iO9 has a power adapter hardwired into the charging stand and a separate, detachable, adapter for the power2go case. The iO10 has just 1 detachable adapter for both the charging stand and power2go case. The iO4 electric toothbrush features Oral-B’s best technology, combining a dentist-inspired round brush head with micro-vibrating bristles for a professional purifying clean feel at home. The Smart Pressure Sensor helps prevent you from brushing either too hard or too softly to better protect your gums. Gum Guard alerts you to time spent brushing with too much pressure. Replace your Oral-B iO toothbrush head every 3 months for the best results. With few exceptions, most electric toothbrushes will do a brilliant job of cleaning the teeth, if used correctly. It is a softer and less aggressive feeling on the teeth and gums, yet still manages to give you the feeling that your teeth have been cleaned really well (which they have).
