About this deal

Create a solution containing a ¼ teaspoon of dish soap per quart of lukewarm water in a spray bottle, shaking it well to mix, and then gently mist the entire plant while it sits in the sink or bathtub. However, not all wipes are created equal and you never really know what you’re getting. Baby wipes can contain chemicals that might be fine for skin, but not the best for plants. We think it’s best to avoid using baby wipes on plants because they really aren’t meant for plant leaves. There are three main functions completed by the leaves of plants: the production of food through photosynthesis, gas exchange between the plant and the atmosphere, and water evaporation through transpiration. Dirt and/or dust covering the leaf surface hinders these functions, and in turn affects the health and growth of the plant. Photosynthesis Soap and water mix is great for cleaning plant leaves and is very safe. Although it will not give you such a lustrous shine as using an oily product, it’s a great first step. You might even be surprised how much better your plant will look after a soap and water cleanup. Banana Peels The other fertilizer I use is my slow release plant food from the book. I put that around the base every 3-4 weeks and it makes such a difference!

That’s why we created Leaf Shine : to not only clean leaves, but to protect them from dust, insects, fungus, bacteria, and debris while also providing a nutritional boost! The following seven methods are the most commonly used ways that people clean the leaves on their indoor plants. Some work better in certain situations, depending on the size of the plants, the types of leaves the plants have, and how dirty they are in general. Which method you choose depends on the type(s) of plant that needs cleaning and how much time and effort you want to invest in the process. If your indoor plants are too large to tip them over and give them a good dunk in the kitchen sink or bathtub then it might be in your best interest to simply give them a shower instead. This protective coating helps to prevent evaporation, holding water inside the plant tissue and in turn increasing their ability to withstand drought conditions. Spraying water on the plant to rinse off dust and grime or swishing/dunking them in water causes this coating to disentegrate. Instead of using water to clean cacti and succulents it’s best instead to use a can of compressed air to clean them.

But milk does actually contain some vitamins and minerals that can be beneficial to plant leaves. The small dose of calcium can actually be healthy for the leaves, and the protein in dairy milk can help break up debris or residue on the leaves. Even products such as Miracle Gro Leaf Shine could potentially be harmful to your plant, regardless of what the adverts say.

Powdery mildew is commonly seen on a wide range of outdoor plants – from courgettes to clematis. But it can affect indoor plants too, particularly if they've had a short stint outdoors to soak up some summer sunshine (the fungal spores are often airborne). Lemon juice is also commonly recommended, much like vinegar. And it carries many of the same risks.Plant leaves actually have pores on them, a lot like your skin. Plants also use their leaves to make energy from sunlight, and a lot of a plant’s respiration occurs through the leaves (though a fair bit of it also occurs in the roots and soil!).

If there is salt build up on the soil surface (it appears as a white crust) from fertilizing with plant food, this method works well to rinse it down through the soil and out the bottom of the container. Clean Fuzzy Leaves With A Brush Besides not being a good option for cleaning your indoor plant’s leaves, baby wipes are also expensive and not good for the planet in general! Mayonnaise Plants have tiny pores called stomata, which are crucial for many plant functions,' explains Eliza Blank. 'Many leaf-shine products clog these openings with oil or wax, limiting the essential gas exchanges stomata play a crucial part in.'

Using Leaf Shine Products

Remember, a plant breathes and expels moisture through its leaves, and it can’t do that if its pores get clogged up with gunk. Mineral oil should be safe, but even so, this step should only be done a couple of times a year. B est Methods To Shine Your Plant’s Leaves
