About this deal

The other two Metaxas in their regular range are 5-Star and 7-Star, so you can figure out that they contain spirits aged for at least five and seven years respectively. So while the number of stars isn’t a comment on how ‘good’ the spirits are, you would naturally expect the 12-star to be richer and more complex, thanks to the extra time in the barrel. More About the Metaxa Stars Metaxa 7 Stars takes it up a notch with a sweeter honeyed note, and the 12 Stars offer a light hint of citrus. Still, the Grande Fine infuses all the Stars in a stunning decanter that tastes incredible and makes a gorgeous gift.

Metaxa 5 Star: Metaxa 5 Star is the flagship product of the Metaxa brand. It is a smooth, mellow spirit made from a blend of fine wine distillates, brandy, and muscat wines. Metaxa 5 Star is aged in oak casks for at least five years, and it has a mellow flavor that can be enjoyed on its own or mixed with other drinks. In the US, Metaxa needs to be imported, but it is very popular here and has been since it was first introduced over 100 years ago. In fact the success of Metaxa in Greece was one of the driving forces behind the brand’s success overall and perhaps the main reason it is now seen as one of the 100 biggest drinks brands in the world. You will pay very little for Metaxa in local bars and restaurants, with the 5 and 7 versions priced around the same as the most basic of whiskey and vodka imports. The 12 is a little more expensive of course, but there’s no better place to enjoy it as this drink is cheaper in Greece than it is in any other country.Metaxa is a very unique tasting brandy that is created and sold primarily in Greece, but is also exported to spirit lovers around the world. But what makes Metaxa so special, what do the 3, 5, 7 and 12 brands signify, how is it made and where can you buy it in the United States? What is Metaxa? As an introduction to the best Metaxa brandy, Metaxa 5 Stars sets the bar high with its light floral and fruity notes. Ideal for sipping but leans more towards mixing. The Metaxa Brandy Collection Star rating represents the minimum number of years the spirit has aged in the barrel. This heavenly spirit that is not quite a brandy or a cognac yet takes you on a journey to Greece that you will want to re-take time and time again. What Is Metaxa? a b "The History of METAXA – The House of Metaxa". METAXA - The House of Metaxa . Retrieved 9 September 2022. As a brandy, Metaxa combines local Greek wines from islands in the Aegean Sea with wine distillates that have been aging for as long as 80 years in some types. This mix of old and new wines brings together the aged aroma and the freshness of newer wine to make a refreshing blend that is bottled and sold.

On the nose, you can immediately smell the roses that are one of the botanicals included. As a lover of dried apricots and figs, I am sent into bliss by my first sip. You are definitely reminded that it’s 40%ABV, but the finish is smooth and ends with a nod to the citrus family. How does Metaxa taste Having been aged for 2 more years than the 5 star type, 7 star Metaxa will showcase a bit more of the nutty, earthy flavors than fruity flavors. The fruit flavors that are present resemble riper, heartier fruits like peaches or raisins rather than light citrus fruits. Alongside the flavor changes, this brandy is also smoother than the 5 star. 12 StarMetaxa 12-Star is the most mature of the regular range of Metaxa Greek spirits, and there’s a push on to familiarize American palates with this classic Greek drink, or the Original Greek Spirit. The Metaxa Private Reserve is the Master Blenders’ personal blend only made once a year, while the Metaxa Angels’ Treasure is ‘what the angels have left behind’. The final bottle in the collection is to celebrate the 130th anniversary of Metaxa with the brandies from the original casts.

Out of curiosity I tried it simply with a splash of soda, as I had a bottle of soda open in the fridge, and it worked really well. The Metaxa Master did say this was a versatile spirit, and he’s absolutely right. (Well, of course he is, that’s why he’s only the 5th Metaxa Master since the company was founded in 1888!) There is a fruit taste to it and notes of citrus, which suggests the use of something like orange blossom or orange oil. There is also a floral taste, imparted both by the rose petals and potentially something like jasmine. Really though, it’s all speculation and no one except the few who make it know what goes into Metaxa. What Are the Different Types of Metaxa? A Metaxa made with a blend of cask brandies aged up to 80 years, aromatic Muscat wine, and delicate botanicals. Taste notes Metaxa 5 is when this drink really starts to come to life. Despite a difference of just two years in age, there is a huge difference in taste and this is typically recommended as the best starting point to truly experience this drink. Metaxa 7
