About this deal

What started as a “one-way conversation” with a magpie has ended with a Victorian man airlifted to hospital with serious injuries to both his eyes. and interview, with band members, Creation staff and interested parties, while maintaining an authoritative air. I often find myself being so deep in thought that I'm not really listening to what my children are saying to me and I extrapolated guilty feelings over that into the story of someone who for a combination of personal ambition and commuter journey time ends up missing out on his kids growing up and not really knowing them or the 'Herberts' they might be hanging out with.

By the mid 90's McGee had a bad drug habit but he also signed the almighty Oasis, who then made Creation the hippest label ever. Spends much of its length discussing the lesser-known (and infinitely more interesting) early years of the label (The Loft for the win! They would have also fit in on the Postcard label out of Scotland as well (Aztec Camera, Orange Juice, Josef K, the Go Betweens, etc)! Etsy’s 100% renewable electricity commitment includes the electricity used by the data centres that host Etsy. Falls into the ranks of tracks like “Dance” by ESG, “Eisbaer” by Grauzone, “Damaged Goods” by Gang of Four or like the album description says Kleenex.

Out of print for many years and regarded as one of the greatest music books ever written, My Magpie Eyes are Hungry for the Prize: The Creation Records Story is the definitive account of the iconic British record label, republished for the label’s 40th anniversary. The first half of the book though is fantastic starting with impact of punk on the scottish music scene and how that got McGee going and starting the Living Room down in London. I found it a great read, detailed about the bands relationships with the label and how the office politics changed at Creation (more interesting than that sounds - honest).

The "prize" of the book's subtitle, for example, is Oasis - A highly derivative band which had huge success in the UK, but is already largely forgotten in the US.I bought these records when they were released and still listen to them today, so I’m a little biased, but frankly this is the best musical biography, of a label as opposed to a band or musician that I’ve read. The reputation of the humble magpie, which won Guardian Australia’s 2017 bird of the year poll, could at best be described as divisive.

The size of a house brick, this book was a labour of love in the reading and, no doubt, in the writing. These cookies help provide information on metrics the number of visitors, bounce rate, traffic source, etc. Alan McGee cuts a rather puerile and pathetic figure by comparison, a Thatcherite narcissist driven by resentment and "ambition", like the unlovable Jesus and Mary Chain who he spent much of the early 1980s trying to start his "revolution" with. Birdlife Australia’s Sean Dooley argued magpies could recognise individual faces and “tend to swoop the people they see as a threat”. busy as The Loft provided some of the first really major sellers on the label -with radio sessions, ‘proper’ tours and all that palaver going on, it looked certain that The Loft would be Creation's first "Breaking" act to hit the mainstream.Gorging on the book's anecdotal feast, one struggles to comprehend not only how Creation survived its hand-to-mouth existence long enough to become a potent force, but just how its cast of eccentrics, egotists and sociopaths eventually triumphed in such a brutal environment without one of them dying.

Some of the technologies we use are necessary for critical functions like security and site integrity, account authentication, security and privacy preferences, internal site usage and maintenance data, and to make the site work correctly for browsing and transactions. Second time round and it's a much better read: McGee is still an awful awful man, and a McGee wired on coke is ten times worse, but the benefits of hindsight make you realise he was much sharper than he's given credit for in terms of understanding where the music industry was going. Some of the data that are collected include the number of visitors, their source, and the pages they visit anonymously. Of all the bands in the First Classic Period Of Creation Records (as I'm sure historians will know it) The Loft were perhaps "The Band Most Likely To"; eschewing any indie shmindiness, The Loft set the pace for the kind of melodic/poetic pop/rock which would come to dominance in the following decade. I dont care about the end of Creation when McGee is taking drugs (I just couldn't ever sympathise with him, he seems so unlikeable) and selling out to Sony.
