About this deal

A Michael Jackson – Thriller Producer – Quincy Jones Written By – Rodney Temperton 4:37 B Jacksons, The – Things I Do For You Live) Written By – T. I also have a 1982 US pressing and while this Japanese press doesn't blow it out of the water, it is noticeably better, even to my layman's ears. Record is like you would expect from a Japanese pressing - sounds gorgeous throughout with a wide and dynamic sound and almost non-existent surface noise. Recently upgraded to the Project Debut Pro and got this along with it, and it plays beyond exemplary.

After years of hunting and trying different presses, the US Mastersound was easily the best of them all. Blue obi features a gold star and black box; the gold star advertises "The Girl is Mine", "Billie Jean" and "Beat It" as being 3 major hit singles, thus indicating a repress. Sleeve is close to VG+, but a small name is written on front / 3 records for less than 5 euros purchased = the fourth free ! Last 4 pages of the 10-page booklet fold out into a double-sided poster of MJ (standing in purple tracksuit/reclining in white suit with tiger cub). I have owned literally dozens and dozens of copies of Thriller from all over the globe - UK, Holland, US, JP, Brazil, MoFi etc.the much-discussed story about Mofi shouldn't influence one's assessment of the sound quality of the record. It currently remains the largest grossing LP and represents the most copies ever sold of one LP worldwide, with sales over 65 million copies according to various sources. For what I heard MOFI reissue changed the whole concept and master it as if it were an audiophile recording.

The pressing, known as the One-Step process, and invented by the Mobile Fidelity Recording Lab, limits the number of times vinyl copies can be made from the original master tapes. This release includes a one sided colour insert with promotional information about Michael Jackson's and The Jacksons' previous albums released on Epic. In addition, Quincy complained that Michael used to spend too much time in preparing the choreographies for each track on his own. USA 1st / early pressings do not list Michael Jackson as a co-producer on the back cover under the "Produced by Quincy Jones. Will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it.

I made a needledrop of one of the tracks from this vinyl record - You can find it on the right side in the videos - Under the name: Michael Jackson - The Girl Is Mine (Ft. I actually have a first European pressing from the early 80s to compare this with and this one is not worse.

It’s not only the best selling record of all time… it’s one of the best Sounding records of all time as well! Issued with obi in gatefold sleeve with 2 inserts: a glossy 10-page fold out booklet + single-page double-sided black and white Japanese information sheet. The first thing I noticed when dropping the needle is that this pressing is LOUD and HOT in the best possible way - extremely warm and audiophile, and really jumps out of the speakers. I ask because Bernie Grundman has already stated publicly that he was not contacted for any aspect of this 40th release, either the MOFI or any other version. I mean, is it a previous Thriller edition with a new packaging and just new additions (hype sticker and slipmate)?

I just picked up a near-mint copy of the first pressing (no co-producer credit for MJ on the back cover) for five bucks, and I can't imagine nobody ever played it, but it's ridiculously quiet and clean. IMO an analog production like Freddie Mercury: Mr Bad Guy ( musicland studios) would be a better choice for Mofi.
