About this deal

Tom's family is a key element of his story, whether it's his Gran with her unusual cookery, his best friend next door or his annoying sister. Kids looking for a book they can relate to in terms of families could try Good Dog McTavishby Meg Rosoff, in which McTavish the dog takes a disorganised family in hand. But just what isthat squeaking sound coming from Tom’s shoes? Tom Gates Book 13: Epic Adventure (kind of) The Tom Gates books are written by multi-million copy bestselling author and illustrator Liz Pichon.

Excellent Excuses comes second in the Tom Gates series. Tom is still struggling to be a good boy at school. He is trying to improve his grades and stay out of trouble, but his band, named DogZombies, takes most of his time. When he is not trying to build a successful band, Tom spends his time staring at Amy Porter. His crush on this girl continues to grow, and it is like Amy grows more beautiful every time Tom looks at her. After stressing over finding a good drummer for his band, Tom and his friend Derek are excited when they discover how good Norman is at it. Now they can play in public, and the boys already have some exciting performances lined up. Doodling on his plaster cast helps to pass the time, along with visits from family (with treats), friends and even Rooster managing to sneak in. This book is VERY important because it contains BISCUITS, BANDS and all my (doodled) plans to make DogZombies the BEST band in the world.trouble is, every other kid in town keeps getting there before him! Tom Gates Book 20: Happy to Help (Eventually)

In the eleven years since The Brilliant World of Tom Gates was first published— the Tom Gates books have entertained and inspired children to get creative through various fun activities like reading, drawing, doodling, writing, performing and even making music. Written in diary form full of Tom's doodles and pictures and his amazing sense of humour The Brilliant World of Tom Gates, was the winner of the Roald Dahl Funny Prize! Each of the 20 plus books in the series (all really funny!) are a rich mix of stories, music, mischief and a whole lot of drawing. The book of books for kids that like illustrated stories with a healthy dash of surreal humour could be said to be Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton's The 13 Storey Treehouse series, in which Andy and Terry build ever more irrationally stupendous layers to their treehouse and battle to get their book written for the publisher on time. Wiegand, Chris (2019-05-13). "Tom Gates Live on Stage! review – songs and sketches from the schoolboy doodler". The Guardian. ISSN 0261-3077. Archived from the original on 2023-06-28 . Retrieved 2023-06-28. Similarly, Emma shared some ideas from a true Liz Pichon fan: 'My son eats up the Tom Gates books and rereads them often. He also read the 13-Storey Treehouse series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and the Timmy Failure books within days of acquiring them.' I loved funny books, and I was being offered funny books to illustrate, but I thought if I wanted to illustrate one I’d better write it myself,” she says. “I didn’t actually get to write my own stories until I was in my mid-40s.”

For all those young readers first exploring new genres and getting to grips with the breadth of the English language, we don't talk enough about short stories. Short stories are rewarding and powerful, and through them you can dip in and explore a wide range of writing. In terms of an age recommendation, I think these are great books for ages 8+ and if you want to start at the beginning, the first Tom Gates book is The Brilliant World of Tom Gates, which was first published in 2011. Claire on Facebook revealed that her 9-year-old is 'flying through' the World of Normbooks by Jonathan Meres and illustratorDonough O'Malley, and they are 'very popular' at @HazeleyLibrary (where The Private Blog of Joe Cowley by Ben Davis is also going down well). A weeks’ worth of drawing, doodling, games, stories and activities in this fantastic new illustrated offering from bestselling author of the Tom Gates series, Liz Pichon! Tom Gates Book 17: Spectacular School Trip

Don’t let your grumpy sister Delia BOSS you around. (Technically not a school issue – but still important.) Mega Robot Bros is a long-running comic strip in The Phoenix, written and illustrated by Neill Cameron. There are three spin-off graphic novels, which are wildly popular in the school library, so we were delighted to see mega-powerful Freddy appear in a more traditional novel form too! The format is similar in style to Wimpy Kid and Tom Gates, but I would say there is a touch more text, so it’s a nice step forward for children who love the illustrated format and are ready for a slightly more complex story. Tom Gates by Liz Pichon: Books 1-15 Collection Set for children aged 7 and up is a comprehensive collection set of the first 15 Tony Gates titles that your child is going to love and learn from. Tom’s everyday trials and tribulations at home and school will keep your child engaged and immerse your young reader in a relatable world, irrespective of where they live. An-almost 10-year-old, Tom is the younger of the two children of Frank and Rita Gates, and is the younger brother to Delia Gates. He attends Oakfield Primary School where he attends Mr. Fullerman's Class 5F, under headmaster Mr Keen. Children in his class include Marcus Meldrew (who sits next to and consistently annoys Tom in class), and Amy Porter (who also sits next to Tom, but whom Tom hopes to impress). Also, in his year at school is his best friend Derek Fingle, who also lives next door to him. Tom has a second neighbour, June Jones, that annoys Tom and dislikes his band. I’m TRYING to get voted onto the school council as well – but thanks to the ABOVE list it’s not exactly going to plan. Tom Gates Book 10: Super Good SkillsThe Tom Gatesbooks by Liz Pichon are hugely popular - but if your children or students are looking for something new, which stories could they possibly love as much? We have some ideas, and you shared your thoughts, too... Unfortunately a couple of small problems called the dentist and my big weirdo sister, Delia, seem to be getting in the way of my BRILLIANT plans… Tom Gates Book 3: Everything’s Amazing (Sort of) Great ideas from Tamsin, then - and you didn't disappoint either, coming up with some brilliant suggestions! Here are some of our favourites: This is a delightful story that any middle schooler will love. The story comes complete with hilarious artwork and a main character that many can identify with. Tom’s relationship with his sister is enjoyable even though they do not agree on many things. Anyone with a sibling knows why Tom finds his sister so annoying. He blames her for his lateness to school and everything else that goes wrong in his life. Amazingly, the writing is easy, and most middle graders will understand the content without needing any help. Towards the end is a glossary that explains the English terms used in the story. Annoy Delia. (Nothing to do with the band, but always FUN) Tom Gates Book 12: Family, Friends and Furry Creatures
