It was just cool to see and read real people's lives and accounts of things that they've been through. You want to see just what its like just step out into a nice big old fat ocean all by yourself in a little rowboat and see just how microscopic you are. A seminal work of modern photojournalism, this landmark collection of photographs and interviews documents the abandon and risk implied in the name of the gang Lyon belonged the Chicago Outlaw Motorcycle Club. The confidence they enjoyed from the outsiders who allowed them access to an insular tribe was provisional. This is a nice clean copy, the binding is strong, The text is clean and pages are not torn or dirty. Seen through the lives of its members, the club evolves over the course of a decade from a gathering place for local outsiders into a more sinister gang, threatening the original group's unique way of life. It tells a fictional story inspired by the 1967 photo-book of the same name by Danny Lyon depicting the lives of the Outlaws MC, a Chicago-based motorcycle club. Put in context of the mid-sixties, Danny Lyon fills an empty chasm left between 'The Wild One' and 'Easy Rider', documenting an important epoch of American subculture. The facsimile edition of Lyon's now classic, seminal work of photo-journalism, originally issued in 1968.

The Bikeriders is one of the few, if not the only, non-sensationalized books having to do with outlaw motorcycle clubs. As with Lyon's other publications, text is an integral part of THE BIKERIDERS; stories from the photographer as well as the voices of a number of bikeriders situate the photographs within the context of the biker subculture and the culture at large. Some folks may find this fascinating, but I thought Lyon's eye was far more revealing than the subjects themselves. Ein amerikanischer Fotobuch-Klassiker der 60er, eines der wichtigsten Bücher in der Geschcihte der Fotografie: Andrew Roth, The Book of 101 Books, Seite 190/191; Martin Parr, Gerry Badger, The Photobook, volume 1, Seite 256; Hasselblad Center, The Open Book, Seite 236/237).

A nice copy: Fine clothbound hardcover with a small bump to one edge of one board, a red dot to the bottom edge of the text block which has bled a bit onto some interior pages, and an inscription to the ffep in a Fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing to the extremities and two tiny closed tears. I always picture the 1950s/1960s in a particular way but these photos could have been taken yesterday. This book is responsible for a good share of popularising their high speed abandon and raucous camaraderie. The song is directly inspired by photojournalist Danny Lyon’s book The Bikeriders, a collection of photographs and interviews with members of the Chicago Outlaws motorcycle club in the mid 60’s.

The film features an ensemble cast that includes Jodie Comer, Austin Butler, Michael Shannon, Mike Faist, Norman Reedus, and Tom Hardy. That September, Toby Wallace, Emory Cohen, Beau Knapp, Karl Glusman, and Happy Anderson joined the ensemble cast. Thompson rode a BSA Lightning 650, Lyon rode a Triumph TR6 and the bikers rode Harley Davidsons, but what really separated the reporters from their subjects was violence and the fear of violence. But once you do you are treated to these small stories of people living in a world that most of us will never encounter or engage with otherwise. This was fascinating to me as someone who knows nothing about motorcycle groups but also the photos surprised me the most.
