About this deal

Don Papa Rum claims to be the ‘world’s first single island rum from the Philippines’, and was created by Stephen Carroll (a former Remy Cointreau executive) for the Bleeding Heart Company. The brand is inspired in part by the legendary figure of Papa Isio, a charismatic leader who fought for independence in the Philippine Revolution of the late 19th Century, and also the spirit, culture and ecosystem of the ethereal Philippine island of Negros, also known as ‘Sugarlandia’ where Don Papa Rum is created. Diageo is a global leader in beverage alcohol with an outstanding collection of brands including Johnnie Walker, Crown Royal and JεB whiskies, Smirnoff, Cîroc and Ketel One vodkas, Captain Morgan, Baileys, Don Julio, Tanqueray and Guinness. This acquisition will enable us to strengthen our position in the exciting rum category which is in early stages of premiumisation and has a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18% in Europe and 27% in the US between 2016-2021. This rum is a cynical cash grab concocted by corporate marketers and ad men attempting to appeal to the discerning drinker. And by "discerning" I mean: has money and knows diddly squat about spirits, especially rum.

Don Papa | Master of Malt

There is controversy among rum enthusiasts regarding the use of additives such as glycerin, vanillin, added sugar, caramel color and other ingredients in the production of Don Papa. Some contend that because of the use of such ingredients and their impact on flavor profile and texture, Don Papa should be labeled "Imitation Rum" instead. [8] A class action suit has been filed in May 2022 in Illinois alleging that Don Papa should not be labeled "Rum", as the undisclosed use of additives could be misleading consumers. The acquisition will be funded through existing cash reserves and is expected to close in the first half of 2023. The company will be available to discuss the transaction in more detail after the release of Diageo’s fiscal 23 interim results on 26 January 2023. About Diageo He founded the Bleeding Heart Rum Company to manufacture the rum in Negros which is considered the sugarcane capital of the country. [2] Don Papa is named after Papa Isio, a leader of the Philippine Revolution during the 1890s. [2] If rum had the rules and regulations of Scotch or Bourbon this stuff wouldn't even be allowed to market itself as rum. Small batch?!? LOL! Next time you're in the Philippines I dare you to visit this charming boutique distillery... Perhaps spend an evening sampling their rum and experiencing the terroir of the region. I'm sure a day at the distillery, which absolutely isn't some industrial beverage facility, would be very beautiful and romantic...

Don Papa Rum Diageo to acquire Don Papa Rum

1. Don Papa Masskara 5y Look, the truth is that this is industrially produced cane sugar/molasses-based (I'm being generous here) ethanol which has been gussied up with all manner of sweeteners, artificial flavours, colours and god knows what else (glycerol and vanillan at least, according to lab tests) to make it palatable -- and it isn't! Bad enough that they call it rum, but it commits an even greater sin than playing fast and loose with the truth -- it tastes bad! The palate arrives much as expected. That candy-coated fruit character endures, here folding in some mint, more toasted coconut, and a bit of strawberry into that orange-dominated body. The finish eventually sees a bit of astringency (that classic petrol note so common with rum) that the sugar can’t quite cover up, though frankly, given the overwhelming rush of sweetness that comes before, this rustic character is almost a relief.

Don Papa Rum, a super-premium, dark rum Diageo to acquire Don Papa Rum, a super-premium, dark rum

It starts right from the nose. Unlike most Caribbean rums, which are driven by vanilla notes, Don Papa is overwhelmingly fruity, featuring tons of orange, some coconut notes, banana, and a tropical hint. You can smell how powerful the sugar is — it exudes sweetness with a distinct candylike character. Don Papa Rum carries the long-standing traditions of Filipino rum making as a first-rate, expressive liquid that has amassed a cult-like following with spirits enthusiasts and industry insiders – a testament to its ability to transcend the rum category. The complex and delicious tasting rum offers a new taste that rum drinkers, brown spirit aficionados and newcomers to the spirit category can all enjoy. https://www.classaction.org/news/addition-of-certain-ingredients-means-don-papa-should-be-labeled-imitation-rum-class-action-argues Stephen Carroll will remain involved with the brand, working alongside Diageo to build on Don Papa Rum’s growth potential. Don Papa was first introduced in Bacolod in 2012, then Manila later that same year. [3] The brand has since become available in international markets such as the United Kingdom and Spain. [3] Don Papa became available in the United States in 2017. [4]Available in over 30 countries worldwide, Don Papa Rum is a super-premium dark rum from the Philippines. Distilled and aged in American oak barrels on the island of Negros Occidental (known locally as ‘Sugarlandia’), the pure, original Negros sugar cane is the foundation for Don Papa Rum’s long, rich-textured finish and flavours of vanilla, honey, and candied fruits. The namesake of Don Papa Rum is inspired by the unsung hero and mystic, Papa Isio, who was one of the leading figures of the late 19th century Philippine revolution. Initially a foreman at a sugar plantation, his leadership and courage played a critical part in liberating the island of Negros from Spanish rule. Don Papa is inspired by his legend and captures his spirit and sense of magic in every bottle. The Philippines isn’t exactly known for rum, but why not? It’s hot, they’ve got sugar, and now they’ve got their own rum finally making it to the U.S. — Don Papa. Don Papa was founded by then Rémy Cointreau executive Stephen Carroll. [1] During a trip to Bacolod, Carroll heard stories of the area having the finest sugar cane in the world. [2] Until that time, rum from the country had been distilled in other areas of the Philippines. [2]
